The event honors the Kern County city with the largest attendance relative to population at Kern County Night. Tom presented the perpetual award to the city excluding Bakersfield, at the Bakersfield Bears versus Visalia Redlegs game.
Sheriff LeRoy F. Galven cites a cattlemen driven reward program that boosted tip reporting aiding a state cattle rustling case. Citizens provided evidence leading to the arrest of Ralph Garnet Lambert and Chester LeRoy Smith. prior tips by Clarence Allen and Cleve Cuddy also aided investigations and resulted in convictions and penalties.
The 1958 Shafter Inter-Service Club Golf Tournament at Bakersfield Country Club draws a strong turnout with seven golfers on the fairways and one hundred for dinner. Clubs urge members to submit preferred starting times, as the Calloway and Handicap systems determine match format. Publicity chairman Bob Somers notes no guests are allowed and trophies will be awarded.
At the Monday City Council meeting Charlie Pope was selected to fill a vacant post from nine applicants. Councilmen Boel and Lane favored his experience and stated he would be permanent if chosen. Pope will assume office on October 8 1958 with Jack Harris continuing as acting inspector. The post’s importance was noted amid Shafter’s accelerated building program.
The council faced questions about assuming control of the Shafter ambulance service after operator Mr. Smith said continued operation was not feasible. The meeting also touched on 1958 Building Code adoption and a trophy presentation by Tom Kelly to Mayor Grundy for Shafter’s attendance at County Night in Bakersfield. The next council meeting is set for October 14.
Maple School enrollment rose to 152 as some families on vacation and students from eighteen smaller county schools attended an institute workshop on multigraded classes. After a general session, specific subjects and special facilities were discussed.
The Shafter Press pledges full support to any service club that undertakes the Money Return Ice Fund project. The fund will be returned to the subscriber within the month if no club adopts the project.
City cannot find a path to subsidize private operation or to seize the service, as officials weigh options including holding the service for Shafter. A new Building Inspector is being sought after a lengthy search.
The Shafter Model Airplane Club stages a small aircraft meet at SHS with entries from members. Programs include a beginners division the Rat Race for intermediates and a stunt and combat division. Prizes donated by Art Brownell include an airplane motor three model plane kits and other gear. An exhibition of large planes with 30 to 50 inch wingspans will also run. Spectators may attend. Membership stands at 18. contact Steve Ruggenberg or Jim Woodard for joining. Initial dues are 50 cents and signup can occur before or at the meet. Club meetings occur biweekly.
A power line at Richland School failed on Monday causing a full day of outages. Classes and cafeteria operated without electricity as repairs began, with disruptions noted from morning until 3 05 p m. The outage mirrored broader city power issues traced to the school plant.
The Shafter Advisory Planning Committee held its first meeting on September 4 to introduce aims and objectives. Cherrier, Planning Director, outlined efforts to develop a land use map and establish the research phase and presentation plans for the group.
Christian Business Men Club restarts weekly noon luncheons at Veterans Memorial Hall starting tomorrow Thursday at 12. Guest speaker is Taft oilman George Decker. The interdenominational group invites all to attend while annual interviews and research discuss regional growth and land use patterns.
The Shafter Press and Shoppe r combined reach about 4 650 readers across Kern County. The Press ranks first in paid weekly circulation while ads rate comparisons place it fifth among seven CNPA weekly members. A county city dispute stems from Bakersfield seeking full 1 cent sales tax share and uses for Greater Bakersfield benefits.
Richland School opens on September 2 with an anticipated enrollment above 2 000 as 60 more students than the previous year are projected. Two new staff members join the faculty: Rheba Ummel as special education teacher and Betty Mulvehal as speech therapist, boosting support for primary and upper grade students.
