Grady Bartlett chairs the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Gro Plant float committee and guides fifty to sixty volunteers to win the sweepstakes award. The float honored the Lord with designated performers and original songs praising divine mercy and community faith.
An application to rezone from R-2 two family dwelling to R-4 multiple family dwelling along Marengo Street east of James Street was rejected by Shafter City Council at its regular meeting. Residents spoke against the change citing potential overcrowding.
Sam L. Becker a 22 year Kiwanis member will be formally installed Friday September 18 as Lieutenant Governor of Division 33 in the California Nevada Hawaii district. The ceremony at Veterans Memorial Hall at 7 30 p m will have Bill Patton Bakersfield former lieutenant governor as installing officer. Becker takes office October 1. Division 33 includes 10 Kiwanis clubs east of the mountains in Kern County. He was introduced at the Fresno district convention as one of 40 incoming lieutenant governors.
Tom M. Shafer publisher of Wasco News for 40 years dies at a convalescent hospital in Shafter at age 82. A Brownwood Texas native born December 14 1887 he helped found Wasco’s incorporation and advance local water projects. He leaves two sons Harold and continued on page 5.
Temperatures topped 100 degrees most of last week before Sunday cooled to a high of 82. Nightly lows ranged from around 62 as daily readings were recorded at the U.S. Cotton Research Station in Shafter.
The Shafter float by the Chamber of Commerce and Grow Plant Industries won the grand prize in Wasco’s Festival of Roses Parade. The 12 000 rose covered entry took top honors among 81 entries and logged over 3 000 hours of work with 55 volunteers. Carla Taffera, 1969 Shafter Homecoming Queen, rode as Rose Queen.
Well known Shafter electrician J C Wells 42 died Tuesday Sept 8 after a fall from a 20 foot ladder caused by an electrical shock. Funeral services held Saturday with burial at local cemetery. Also notes on Shafter parade entries and upcoming AFs movie at Richland school auditorium announced by Mrs Russell Kodet president of Shafter American Field Service Committee.
Sixty six Shafter High School graduates will attend colleges outside Kern County this fall per a Shafter Press survey. Nine chose Fresno State College, eight will enroll at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, seven at Pacific College Fresno, and five at other institutions including Texas A&M Purdue Oral Roberts New Mexico Military Institute and UC Berkeley UCLA UC Santa Barbara.
