Shafter Flotilla Enjoys 12 Day Inside Passage Cruise
About 40 Shafter residents and friends chartered nine small boats to cruise the San Juan Islands and Canadian waters from Seattle for 12 days. Led by Mert Wiedmann, the group sailed roughly 600 miles, with picnics, barbecues, and music aboard, and some stopped at Malibu BC to pick up local youths for Young Life activities.

Dr. Richard H. Garber, plant pathologist at the USDA Cotton Research Station, is the sole nominee for the Richland School Board vacancy. Unless another qualified candidate appears by 5 p.m. Thursday, Garber faces appointment by the district board. An election could still be called if a petition by 5 percent of last district voters is filed by September 24 with the County Superintendent of Schools.

Patti Camp of Wasco has been chosen Wasco Rose Festival Queen for 1970. She is a 16 year old Wasco High School senior, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Camp. First runner-up is Maureen Hill. second runner-up Marilyn Harrison. Miss Congeniality selected Ninfa Flores. A reception, country music show, and street dance are set for September 11 at Palm Avenue Cafetorium and Wasco High School Auditorium.

Memorial services for A W Eckmann in Glendale
A W Eckmann, longtime farmer and community volunteer active in Boy Scouts and church, died after a period of illness. Memorial services were held at Church of the Recessional with Rev. Jack F. Gwillim officiating and burial at Forest Lawn in Glendale. Eckmann, born in Cincinnati, earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ohio State University and returned to Columbus for a 50th anniversary alumni reunion in May 1960.

Pleasant fall weather continued in Shafter with highs near 91 on August 31 and September 2, and 78 on September 5. Daily high and low readings were recorded at the USDA Cotton Research Station, noting the cool spell since May 20 when the high also reached 78.
