La Gardenia marks 72 years serving La Mexican Colony
La Gardenia in the Mexican Colony, two and a half miles south of Shafter, celebrates 72 years in the same location and 21st anniversary under the current ownership. The store began as a grocery in 1928, added a pool hall and dance hall, introduced electricity in 1933, and earned a liquor license in 1935. Community events, Christmas parties, and Sunday menus have been longstanding traditions, with the family inviting locals to a free sweet bread and coffee Sunday morning to mark the milestone.
