Assemblyman William M Ketchum criticizes the five day veto session as too short and largely ceremonial. He notes lawmakers met sparingly on Labor Day and the days following with little business beyond resolutions and leadership votes for the Governor’s school financing bill.
Officials argue over delaying action on vetoed measures and favor dispatch to resume work. Some say extended debate is costly and not aimed at overriding vetoes, urging adjournment to allow district and committee work to continue.
Mrs. Sheila Ramey, slated to teach Maple School's combined second and third grade, fell ill after her son Michael showed yellow eyes. Michael diagnosed with infectious hepatitis, six weeks or more of TLC and rest likely. Substitute teacher Mrs. Clara McMahon of Wasco steps in. her husband to be released from military service in October.
The John Peterson family ends a curtailed vacation due to illness of young John Scott. Peterson teaches at Richland School and Mrs. Peterson teaches at Maple. Jill attends Richland, John Scott rests from illness while relatives in Idaho, Utah, and western states hosted them.
The infant Theresa Ann Lane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry L. Lane of rural Shafter, died one day after birth. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Agee Family Funeral Home chapel in Shafter with burial in Shafter Memorial Park. Survivors include parents two sisters Darrell Lane Bakersfield paternal grandfather Lew Farquer Nipomo maternal grandparents Lois Lehr Newton Kansas and others. Pallbearers were Michael Manos and Johnny Cotton.
The Shafter Board meets in session with Supervisors Jackson Holt Webb Saizer present and Fairbairn absent. Items approved include franchise actions tax funds transfers and public works projects such as roads signals and curb gutters. Budgetary items travel requests and employee status changes were authorized. several resolutions and interagency agreements were referred to counsel.
