Paul Petersen praised for long service to Shafter community
The Shafter City Council issued a Resolution of Commendation recognizing Paul Petersen for over 12 years with the Kern High School District Police Department, including his campus work at Shafter High School and his decision to resign to allow a resident to fill the role. Police Chief John Zrofsky praised Petersen for collaboration with multiple agencies and helping solve crimes with information from students. Petersen served in Shafter since 1981, rising to lieutenant and acting chief for seven months in 1989.

Lottie Cummings a Shafter pioneer dies near 100
Lottie Cummings a longtime Shafter resident who would have turned 100, died after a life spanning Oklahoma and California. She married Mack Cummings in 1920, raised nine children, endured the loss of her husband in 1941, worked at Mettler and Sons Potato Sheds for 25 years, and remained active in the community before moving to Kern Crest Manor. She was a member of Valley Bible Church.

The San Joaquin Valley Quality Cotton Growers Association authorized Beltwide Cotton Cooperative and Weil Brothers as exclusive marketers, aiming to showcase high quality SJV cotton worldwide. Led by Shafter resident Larry Starrh, the nonprofit formed in 1998 to prevent misidentification and maintain mill confidence amid a 1998 law change. Weil Brothers, a 124 year old firm, and Beltwide bring marketing options to growers.
