Residents gathered at the Downtown Plaza in Shafter on September 11 2002 to honor those who died and those who served in the Armed Forces. The event featured a ROTC Colorguard from East Bakersfield and Pastor Jim Williams, a veteran awarded two Purple Hearts, urging repentance and unity in the war on terrorism.

Richland board upgrades school naming with new site terms
Richland District School Board Trustees met on August 19 and approved renaming two district schools. The former Richland Primary and Richland Intermediate will both house grades 1 through 5. A naming committee was announced by Superintendent and Board President Steven Skalisky to select new school names.

Shafter Bond Story Ties to Prop 47 November Vote
The Shafter School District built support for a new elementary school and repairs after a June bond victory. If Prop 47 passes in November it would authorize a 13.05 billion statewide school bond, enabling matching funds to complete Richland projects. The district already secured half the funds from the June bond while awaiting state funds amid California’s debt. Richland has requested Prop 47 funds from the state board.
