The American Legion sponsors a blood bank drive at the Shafter Veterans Hall on September 4 from 3 to 6 PM with free cholesterol checks. The Shafter area needs donors. call Red Everett at 746-4132 for details and participation.
Northern Kern County's Community Bible Study plans its eighth year starting in September with weekly classes for 30 weeks through May 1992. For information call Teddy Voorhees at 746-2356. Shafter Federated Woman's Club hosts a free admission tea Sept 4 at the Shafter Veterans Hall with refreshments. Aglow retreat Sept 20–22 at Hartland Christian Camp with speaker Sharon Barrett from Edmonds Washington. Becky Maze and Bernice Almberg provide contact numbers for more information. Kern County Cattle Women present a celebration of western culture.
Dana Hilderbrand, 22, died last November when her car hit a truck near Lerdo School. Stephanie Rodriguez, who pleaded no contest, was sentenced to 400 hours of community service and fined 1275 dollars. Judge Gary Ingle ordered 815.27 dollars monthly restitution, with payments starting in October and a review in six months. The Hilderbrands said the sentence is unfair while Rodriguez said she is pleased with the outcome.
Kern County detectives arrested 18 year old Offord Rollins of Wasco last week at Wasco High School and charged him with killing 17 year old Maria Rodriguez of Shafter. Detectives cited lab results plant material and an eyewitness linking Rollins to the crime scene and his vehicle. The body of Rodriguez was found near a canal bank in a wooded area.
City Council and Planning Commission agree on the need for a new City Hall and Police Department or major remodeling. City Manager Wade McKinney outlines space constraints from growth linked to the Return-to-Custody facility, with options to build, remodel, or relocate. short term needs include six City Hall hires and five police positions.
