Maple School barbecue and carnival set for Sept 11
Maple School will hold its annual barbecue and carnival Sept 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are sold by Maple students at the door. A Westside Fellowship group plans a Sept 11 memorial from noon to 1 p.m. at Wasco City Hall to pray for one hour with local churches invited to fast.

Shafter baby death linked to assault case unfolds
The death of two year old Gonzalez in Shafter is investigated as possible assault after major head injuries and signs of seizures. Deputy Venable questioned Herrera who changed his story about the child being in the shower during the incident. Gonzalez died Aug 31 and Herrera faces murder in the first degree and child abuse charges with a scheduled felony arraignment Sept 10 in Bakersfield.

Shafter Man Killed in Highway Collision Near Lerdo and Scofield
Sean Thomas Parten, 21, of Shafter, died last Tuesday in a crash on E Lerdo Highway west of Scofield Road. Passenger in a 2003 Chevrolet driven by Mark Rios, 41. Rios impaired, charged with vehicular manslaughter and DUI with injury. Rosario Flores, 49, of Buttonwillow, critical with major injuries. Firefighters aided rescue as vehicles overturned following a passing maneuver at 70 mph.

North Kern-South Tulare Hospital District seeks Shafter Wasco support
Daniel Murray of the district presented a plan for a new 10 acre facility to serve Shafter and Wasco with a 40 bed hospital 60 bed nursing facility outpatient care and urgent care on Highway 43 between Shafter and Wasco The district invites Shafter residents to back boundary extension and bond options while Wasco has already given tentative approval. The council approved using Shafter for recycling studies and the district aims for 2009 SAFCo approval and board expansion from 5 to 9 members.

Fires consume GMC building and Richland district office
Two Labor Day weekend fires at 529 and 525 Shafter Ave in Kern County devastated GMC Roofing and Building Paper Products and the Educational Support Services Office of Richland School District. The first blaze Aug. 30 destroyed rolls of paper and damaged the GMC structure, while the Aug. 31fire damaged the GMC site and destroyed the district office and two school buses. About 40 firefighters fought the blazes. officials deem the causes undetermined with no malice suspected. The first fire caused about 1 million dollars in losses.
