August Building Permits Double Over Past Month
August building permits in Shafter nearly doubled July valuations. Total August valuation 133500 with new homes accounting for all but 10200. July was 67000, lifting year total to 921039. Dalke Brothers seven new homes on Manuel and Minter. Deeter Construction four on Mark and Shaw. Carter and Smith two on Willow. Two swimming pools on Mannel and Mannel. 24 Year Old Father Dies from Wounds
Donnie Ray Veach 24 died from gunshot wounds suffered Sunday in Bakersfield. Funeral services held in Wasco at 10 am with Rev. Ralph Gaither officiating. Veach lived in Wasco two months from Oregon, survived by wife Rae nell and son Kerry, mother Bonnie Nickels, six brothers and two sisters, interment at Shafter Cemetery.

Four FFA Members Enter State Fair Steer Competition
Four FFA members from Shafter High School showed prize steers at the California State Fair in Sacramento. August 25 to 31 saw Burley Dooley accompany the youths while Kenneth Pasley earned third in class with a lightweight Angus steer, winning a white ribbon and cash prize. Roger Steelman entered a Hereford, and Joe and Robert Romanini showed Shorthorn steers, with their entries placing well.

Opening day enrollments at Richland School and Shafter High School rose above last year figures. Richland School listed 1,640 students, up 50 from 1957, while Shafter High reported 881 students, up 74 from 807. Enrollments are expected to rise further as the year progresses.

Revell Daughter to Attempt Catalina Channel Swim
Mary Margaret Revell 21 daughter of Dr and Mrs John Revell of Shafter will attempt to swim the Catalina Channel on Friday of this week. For practice she swam 19 miles from Malibu to Ocean Park in 8 hours 19 minutes. Revell is a senior at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles.

Labor Day Weekend Police Actions in Shafter
Shafter police reported no major traffic problems over the Labor Day weekend. On August 30 two men, Jackie Worsham and Sherman Ray Mashew, were arrested for attempting to pass checks drawn on Emanuel Mettler Co after M. M. Banks alerted the department. Burgess James E. caused a disturbance at Larrys Cafe on Central Ave and, after jail placement, broke windows attempting escape.

Trailer Fire at Shafter High Causes Spontaneous Combustion
Chief Ed Bender reports a September 1 fire at Shafter High School originated from spontaneous combustion. Dirty rags used for cleaning were left in an empty trailer which was heated in the sun, igniting the oily rags and burning the trailer. Damage was about $25.00.

Twin Sons Home on 12 Day Leave
Glen and Ken Johnson seventeen year old twin sons of Mr and Mrs T J Johnson of 424 Gibson Lane have completed eight weeks basic training at Fort Ord California and are home on a twelve day leave. After visiting here they will fly to New Britton Connecticut for twenty six weeks of artillery training and schooling. The twins attended Shafter High School for four years and graduated last May.
