Albert C Bert Winter 80 of 408 Cross St Shafter died Thursday in a Shafter convalescent hospital. Services were held Saturday at 1 p m in the Agee Family s Funeral Home Shafter with Rev Ralph L Gardner officiating and burial in Shafter Memorial Park.

Winter in Shafter and detailing survivors including son Norval Winter of Shafter two daughters Gladys Long and Ruth Searcy two brothers Jim Winter of Carnegie Oklahoma and John Winter of Avenal a sister Anna Lusk of Carnegie five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Grape harvest is in full swing in the Shafter area, the center of raisin production in Kern County. Last year Shafter produced 2,285 tons, accounting for most of the county’s 3,720 tons.
Bakersfield area high schools including Greater Bakersfield Arvin McFarland Shafter Kern Valley and Ridgecrest will start on September 8 with classes as usual though September 9 California Admission Day is a school holiday. Physical exams and polio and measles vaccinations are required for new students. Dress and Grooming Code changes allow full length slacks for girls and longer hair for boys.
Dennis Marlatt 17 and Nancy Lynn Marlatt 20 died in a head on crash near Dalhart Texas while en route to Hillsboro Kansas to start at Tabor College. The driver dozed and swerved into the opposite lane. A teacher in the other car was injured but not critically. Funeral at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. Burial at Shafter Memorial Cemetery.
Shafter Chamber of Commerce reports progress on the Wasco Rose Festival float. A 15 to 31 foot frame on a tractor is road tested and ready. 10,000 roses will be placed. Volunteers are sought to finish the float under director Bill Pitcher with Grady Bartlett as committee chair.
The Shafter area saw highs in the low 90s and nightly lows from 56 to 62 last week. Readings were recorded at the USDA Cotton Research Station, listing daily high and low temperatures for the period.

Betty Sue Snyder of 1608 S Broadway Wasco was detained during a routine Shafter Police Department investigation. She allegedly operated a car with stolen license plates and had no identifying documents, Police Chief Hanley Witcher said.
