Shatter-Wasco Irrigation District Sets Tax Rate
The Shatter-Wasco Irrigation District board set tax rate at 60 cents per $100 of assessed value. District valuation rose to $4,044,300 from last year’s $3,973,125. Delegates were chosen for Grass Valley California Irrigation District and National Reclamation Association conventions. Treasury reported $35,355.36 on Sept. 1.

Labor Day Auto Victim Struck Down on Lerdo
Albert Shydell Taylor, 36, a farm laborer from Oklahoma City, was struck on Lerdo Highway east of Shafter by Albert Lloyd Ratzlaff, 42, of Wasco. Taylor died at Kern Hospital after being rushed there by Armstrong Ambulance. Ratzlaff was not held.

Postmaster Job Open in Shafter Applicants Sought
Applications for the Shafter branch postmaster position are due September 28. Wesley L. Sherwin of the Civil Service Commission announced this week. The $5470 yearly post is open to residents aged 25 or older who have lived in the delivery area for a year and can manage postal business. A written exam on general and postal management topics will be held in Bakersfield after the deadline. Contact Sherwin at the Shafter post office for more information.

Recreation program in Shafter tops 83 643 participants
Some 83 643 persons either participated or were spectators during the 1954 Shafter Recreation Commission program. Roy Farrell said attendance rose from 24 000 to the current total as the staff expanded from three to 30. The peak was 25 429 in swimming. Participants spanned Rio Bravo, Richland, Kern County Union High, Shafter districts, the city, Kern County, and the Shafter Community Chest. A facilities study committee was formed.
