Shafter merchants offer a wide range of merchandise for thrifty shoppers during the Beter Value Dollar Days and Back-to-School Sale beginning tomorrow and running through Saturday. Local stores preview items and services aimed at housewives seeking reasonable prices.
A PTA Board reception is planned at 2 pm with the theme Teaching Today’s Youth. Mrs. Aduel Mettler will present officers and committee chairs, and Mrs. Eyron Hansen will outline a PTA curriculum study. High school faculty members will discuss parent teacher relations, and student body officers will be introduced. Dr. and Mrs. Grant W. Jensen will provide refreshments.
Cotton research progress is unveiled at the Reed Distributors Field Day hosted by the U S Government Cotton Experimental Station in Shafter California. Experimental Farm Director John H Turner notes advances in breeding irrigation and mechanization as growers and gin managers tour the facility and hear yield forecasts of 750 to 800 pounds per acre with possible 850 to 900 pounds for some acreages as Kern County acreage declines 30 percent.
About 200 of the 400 attending church members gathered at the First Southern Baptist Church for the fifth annual inter denominational singing convention. Special quartets from local churches aired hymns as Rev. McKenzie announced plans for the California State Singing Convention in Bakersfield September 25 26. John Wheeler of Shafter and W W Truman of Los Angeles held leadership roles as preparations attracted an estimated 2000 attendees.
Registration for Shafter high school and elementary school students starts today with events planned tomorrow Saturday and Tuesday. High school registration runs 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, with expected enrollment around 650. Richland Elementary begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. Tables sit outside school buildings for new student registrations and former students sign in.
Youthful staff of Mannel News in Shafter contribute to the Emergency March of Dimes, raising funds with pennies and nickels and hosting a Kiddie Carnival, a Colade stand, and a Magic Show. The Kiwanis club accepts the $2.10 donation.
A. C. Burnett, manager of Mc Mahan's Furniture in Shafter, won the chain's recent seven store sales contest. He left Tuesday for Catalina with his family to claim the prize and thanked Shafter residents for their support.
The Shafter Press features the Thrifty Shopper as a budget conscious guide to real bargains in the community. She shops daily for value and reliability and promotes the slogan Shop at Home and Save. The column promises insights into good living that stretch every dollar.
The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District may raise its 60 cent tax rate as Board of Equalization members join the district board to set the new rate after the regular meeting in Shafter. Last year the rate was 60 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, with district land valued at about $3,973,125. The public is invited to attend the meeting.
A total of 76 dollars has been contributed by 11 Shafter residents and firms to the Joyce School Fund drive. The fund aims for 150 dollars to cover seven year old Joyce Huskins's tuition and incidental costs at the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley.
