Local schools win state substance abuse program funding
Kem County schools join a 36 district consortium to receive more than 16,000 in CARE Program funds over three years. Steve Hageman of KCSS wrote grant work in a week, securing a DARE curriculum and officers for grades K-6, with five law enforcement agencies involved. Richland-Lerdo teachers earn language development specialist credentials
Three Richland-Lerdo School District teachers recently passed rigorous tests to become Language Development Specialists. The credential lets them teach English to students who speak other languages amid growing Korean Arabic and Hispanic enrollments. Proficiency and art teacher Janeen Smith and language arts/history teacher Janet expressed relief and pride at passing, noting the effort was worthwhile.

Bus travel zone established by school district and police
The Richland Lerdo School District with Shafter Police establish a bus travel zone on school days from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. Traffic on Wall Street and Atlantic Avenue is discouraged during these times. Parents may not park or drive in the zone and are urged to use Valley Street for pickups. The change starts Sept 20, 1993, with third graders from the Lerdo Highway south side delivered to the Primary School and kindergartners bused to the Intermediate School for routing.

Film crew eyes New York feature after Wasco shoots
