Francis Frank Harper Wisner 86 died Sept 8 in Shafter after a life in newspapers. He and brother Floyd bought The Press in 1962 and The Buttonwillow Times, later partnering with Jack Frost until 1969. Wisner retired in 1969 with wife Audrey Leigh. daughter Francine Gallane notes the family’s deep ties to Shafter. Born Oct 20 1906 in Scottsbluff Nebraska, he rose from paper routes to Linotype advertising manager before publishing.

Elk Corporation plans a 150000 square foot roofing facility on 87 acres at the Randhers Oil site in Shafter. Groundbreaking set for 10 a.m. today with initial 90 jobs and potential payroll of 3 million after several months. The project, endorsed by city officials, follows rapid planning since 1990 and aims to boost the local economy amid California's slow growth. Drug arrests in Shafter for meth possession and child endangerment
On August 29, residents Juan Gutierrez, 33, and Amalia Gutierrez, 31, were arrested at 237 S. Shafter after a probation search. Officers found 23.5 grams of methamphetamine valued at $2,350, $289 cash, and a 1980 Datsun 280Z. They were booked at Kern County Jail on possession for sale and child endangerment charges.
