Shafter City Hall and Police Department released detailed statistics supporting a crime decline while arrest and conviction rates rose. Police Chief Gene Kaplan cites a 20 percent crime drop since his arrival, with conviction rates up more than 50 percent February through July 1979 versus 1978.
Rotary Club President Ray Novak announced the first forum in a series honoring Rotary International’s 75th anniversary. The event on Thursday September 13 features John J. Barch of the New York Cotton Exchange and Klaus Sunder of Merrill Lynch discussing cotton marketing with audience Q and A. Dinner precedes the forum under Larry Hamilton and Tut Anderson. The Community Development Program Department will hold a public meeting in Shafter at the Veterans Hall 309 California Avenue on Monday September 24 at 7 p.m. to review past projects remaining needs and proposed programs for future Block Grant funding. Attendees are invited.
Seven candidates filed by the August 30 deadline for three seats on the Richland School Board of Trustees. Incumbents Tom Almberg Don Neufeld and Dave Anderson seek reelection. Challenger lineup includes Lawrence Handel Gary Ingle Norman Lum and Dine Sheldon. Election is Tuesday November 6. Seats held by John Dobbs and Karmen Jacobsen are not up.
Delano College Center at Shafter High School offers 22 courses in Shafter and Wasco with no tests or fees beyond books. Ages 18 and up may enroll. registration begins this week with academic advising, veteran information, and financial aid available.
With dove season opening on September 1 1979 the Kern county Sheriff's Office reminds hunters that it is unlawful to hunt in No Shooting zones within Bakersfield city limits. Areas include the Kern River bed from the Kern Canyon entrance to Interstate S. Private property outside No Shooting zones requires written permission. Violators may be cited. Maps available at the Kern County Sheriff's Office and Bakersfield Police Department can provide city limit information.
