The Shafter Press sets altered deadlines for the September 4 edition due to the holiday. Display copy is due August 29 at 10 a.m. and proofing ads by August 28 at 3 p.m., with classified and display ads and editorial/news releases due by August 30. Blood drive details and contact numbers included.
The Shafter Federated Woman's Club will hold its annual membership tea on September 4 at 2 p.m. at the Shafter Veterans Hall. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
Shafter High School Class of 1986 plans a five year reunion on August 31 at Buena Vista Lake. Activities start at 3 p.m. with a picnic, volleyball, and water skiing. Bring your own food. For details call Weidenbach at 746 5437.
Shafter City Council approved a resolution supporting an insurance settlement reached by Brown & Bryant with state and federal agencies. The deal, worth 3.26 million dollars for site cleanup, faces DOJ opposition over liability. Council members stressed taxpayers may bear extra costs if the offer fails or is rejected.
SPD officers arrested one man and seized about 60 marijuana plants, indoor growing equipment, and other paraphernalia during a 7 a.m. search at 18681 Cherry Ave, a rural residence. Four uniformed and undercover officers executed the warrant and found plants behind the house and in an outbuilding.
City leaders seek input on a new City Hall police complex as Sunset Avenue and Central Valley Highway area growth prompts consideration of sites. A July meeting warned the process will be lengthy with studies needed before realization. The Return-To-Custody facility drives budget and staffing growth, doubling annual operating costs and adding about 70 workers.
Richland/Lerdo School District Superintendent Dan Knapp reports challenges for the 1991-92 year including growing pupil numbers and funding gaps. A community committee is studying year round schooling with an October 10 meeting featuring Delano Tehachapi and Bakersfield panelists to discuss pros and cons. Nearby districts have faced budget cuts and failed bond measures amid a statewide $15 billion deficit.
