Richland School District opens the 2014 2015 year
Richland School District started the 2014 2015 year with 3610 total enrollment Pre K through eighth grade. At the August 18 board meeting Rosa Romero and David Franz reported on the Summer Reading Academy a five week program for first to third graders hosted at Redwood Elementary. The district partners with the City of Shafter to raise reading levels. Attendance averaged 158 students per day with strong adult support. The program doubled sight word knowledge and boosted reading speed by 10 percent. The board approved routine items including a contract modification extending the superintendent’s 226 day term and Science Camp for sixth graders. The 2 TM California STEM Symposium will be held September 21 23 2014 in San Diego with about 3000 educators. A ten person Richland team will attend. Back to School Nights are scheduled in September for elementary sites and Richland Junior High, with a special board meeting on September 29 to discuss a possible unification.

Arrest Made In Hay Theft Case In Buttonwillow
Deputies investigated a theft of 60 bales of hay worth about 1000 dollars in Buttonwillow on July 29 2014. Detectives from the Kern County Rural Crime unit arrested Roy Henning 49 of Buttonwillow on August 29 2014 for grand theft 487a while he remained in custody for an unrelated theft.
