Kiwanis Club hosts annual Halloween Parade Thursday night with advance entries signaling a large event. Parade forms at 6 p.m. at Top’s Market parking and proceeds down James Street with cash prizes from 5 to 25 dollars.
Richland District Board of Education sets a 4 p.m. November 17 session at Wasco High School cafeteria to discuss unification with Kern County districts. Trustees also plan a noon November 20 bid opening for aquatic center repairs and report progress on a 1969-70 salary contract with the Richland Teachers Association.
The city council rejected John Lachenmaier’s offer to donate a mounted animal collection due to an estimated 13 000 need for a building and ongoing maintenance. Budget strain from police, city hall remodeling, and street projects left no funds for the exhibit.
Shafter’s annual clean up drive advances with the Community Improvement Council leading efforts and city trucks ready to haul trash. Residents must place waste at rear of properties by early Friday November 7 as pickups begin Monday November 3 to speed collection.
Shafter High School hosts Homecoming activities led by queen candidates Margaret Miller Dorothy Alvidrez Debbie Hoggard Debbie Smith Carla Tafra and Holly Kliewer with coronation during halftime of the Shafter Taft football game. The Generals open South Sequoia Conference play at 8 p.m. with a 6 p.m. junior contest and a homecoming dance to follow.
Five California redwood trees were planted in Bakersfield's Centennial Park by Lt. Governor Ed Reinecke and local officials. The trees are the first of more than thirty planned by the Kern County Bicentennial Commission for the park and California State College Bakersfield, donated by the California Division of Forestry. The special hybrid is developed for eventual freeway planting.
