Kern County cotton growers are invited to a Cotton Mechanization Field Day at 10:00 A.M. next Wednesday November 2. Hosted by the University of California and the U.S. Department of Agriculture the event will showcase seedbed types seeding tests mechanical thinning weed and grass control by cultivations chemical flame and weeders. The tests aim to determine harvesting efficiency of the mechanical picker and its impact on yield and seed cotton quality.

Huge Cotton Fire Strikes Shafter-Wasco Gin Yard
A two hour blaze at the Shafter-Wasco Ginning Company caused extensive damage to 300 bales of loose seed cotton and 50 loaded trailers in the gun yard. Firefighters from Shafter Bakersfield and Delano fought the flames with pumpers and a trailer, the gun resuming operation by 5 p.m. Smoke and water damage will be high.
