The Shafter Press urges an end to public feuding as harmful to the town. It calls for council and civic leaders to sit down, discuss problems, and work together to keep Shafter advancing.
Lee Thomas, commander, presided at the Legion meeting in the new Legion Hall. The American Legion plans a dance after Armistice Day football in Shafter, to begin at 9 30 p m. A ceremony participation was discussed for Shafter or the game that evening. details to be finalized next Monday. Refreshments were served.
Dr Ohlsson spoke at the Rotary Club luncheon on preventing tuberculosis noting it costs more lives than all other infectious diseases and can be prevented. He listed education case finding treatment rehabilitation and medical research as key controls and explained Christmas Seal funds support these except direct treatment. Kern County reported 199 TB cases in 1948 with deaths and a death rate near the national average.
California cotton growers gathered at the U S Experimental Farm in Shafter for the Cotton Mechanization Field Day. Sponsors were the California Cotton Mechanization Advisory Committee with Master of Ceremonies James Fairbanks. Notables included Dean Hutchinson and Dr Sharp as well as George Harrison of the Shafter station and Marvin Hoover. Demonstrations covered spacing, thinning by hand and mechanical choppers, weed and grass control, seed bed types, and plantings to evaluate mechanical harvesting while maintaining yield and quality. Harrison cautioned on defoliation and picker readiness, while Hoover reported cost studies on 58-acre Fresno County tests comparing machine and hand picking.
The Hereford Aberdeen Anguss Galloway and Shorthorn cattle were introduced into this country from the British Isles shaping earlier farm herds and breed stock.
The Shafter Art Association begins its season at the Veteran's Memorial Hall at 7 30 PM with a double feature. Harry Smith of Kernville and Bakersfield exhibits acclaimed oil paintings and leads a class, while Ben Homfeld Wasco and Al Eckman Shafter show vacation films and slides. Richard Kirkham chairs the program and Mrs. Fred Hasty handles guest book duties with a reception to follow.
In a week of upsets two contestants Peters and Hutchings both finished with three misses in the Press football guessing contest. They shared the $10 prize, each receiving $5 to claim at the Press office. Notable misses included Bakersfield JC at Sacramento JC and Visalia over East Bakersfield, with Stanford Santa Clara tie missed by all.
Johnson clarifies that a $102.07 payment to Johnson Neuman Dept Store was made not by the City of Shafter but by the Shafter City Fire Department for Firemen's Club coveralls and bowling shirts. The city was billed due to a clerical oversight and later reimbursed by the Fire Department.
Paul Makovsky, acclaimed violinist praised by the New York Times, will perform at Wasco High School Auditorium next Tuesday evening November 8 at 8 o clock under the Wasco Shafter Community Concert Association. His career spans Paris and towns across Europe, a 1940 U S debut at Town Hall, Army Air Corps service in World War II, OSS work, and a later return to concert prominence with comparisons to Fritz Kreisler.
Shafter high school's undefeated Generals travel to Orosi for a league clash with the Wildcats. Orosi is rated near Lindsay, a potential hurdle as Shafter eyes a key Dinuba game next week. A preliminary lightweight match starts at 6:00 p.m.
The Shafter Civic Banquet on November 17 features Dean James Mallock of St. James Cathedral Fresno as forum speaker. The Richland Teachers Club and community members will enjoy banquet fare music and decorative effects with the audience invited to hear the address. Banquet chairman Miss Helen Holmes notes active committee participation and urges attendance. A forum program will also be available for those unable to attend the banquet.
Scout Troop No 53 will conduct a rummage sale in front of Scaroni's Ice House on Saturday November 19 Local residents with rummage to contribute are asked to have it on their front porch or curb and the local boy scouts will pick it up all day Friday tomorrow November 4 Kenneth Pipkin Scoutmaster 2983 may be contacted by anyone having rummage to be collected after that date.
A large crowd attended the annual Firemen's Masquerade Ball in the War Memorial Building. Winners included Wesley Gorsching and Nancy Wright for the most unusual costumes, with a waffle iron donated by Schneider and Wikoff. Feature prizes went to Jake Neufeld, Bessie M. Hill, and Rolf Jacobsen for items such as a G. E. toaster, silverware set, Hoover vacuum, and Frigidaire. Door prizes included boxes of groceries and a pearl necklace from Lawson's Jewelry.
An automobile belonging to Gilbert E. Hamlin of Smith's Corner was reported stolen Friday night from in front of his home. The car was later recovered by Constable Blake Witcher.
Thousands crowded Shafter streets for the 10th annual Halloween Parade sponsored by the Shafter Kiwanis Club. Master of ceremonies Jack Hill led the event with help from the Fire Department and parade chairman Joe Frizzell. Richland School Band performed after the parade before cash prizes were awarded by Ralph Tucker and Bill Lowe.
The Kiwanis Club of Shafter held its annual Halloween parade awarding prizes in the First Division. Prizes included 1st through 6th places with cash or trophies awarded to top finishers.
Shafter High School's Generals beat Exeter 28-0 on the Exeter field to extend their winning streak to three games. Edwards scored twice, Paul Cato added a 60 yard run, and Palomo ran in a late touchdown with Martin converting all 11 extra points.
Mr and Mrs Willard Hellman and daughter Linda Irene spent the weekend in Shafter at the home of Mrs Hellmans parents Mr and Mrs Martin Anderson.
Shafter Community Chest directors met Tuesday in the Kelly and Channeson building and set a follow up meeting for two weeks later on November 8 to elect directors for the next year and approve the drive budget. Delegates are requested from each town club and all paid members are invited. Present directors are Herbert Schirmer, chairman, Earl Weil, Phil Ohanneson, and Dr. O G Ohlsson.
This coming Saturday evening November 5 the new Legion Hall hosts a ptuck dinner and dance for Legion members wives Auxiliary members and their husbands. The theme is hard times with a prize for the worst dressed pair. Dink Carol and his band will provide music for dancing. Dinner starts at seven with dish assignments by alphabet and each guest brings own plate and silverware.
The P T A urged a yes vote on propositions 1 and 2 at a briefing in Richland Cafeteria Wednesday morning. Mrs Aduel Mettler chaired the meeting with Miss Beulah Bartlett and Mrs Letha Brock presenting the case and asking reps to contact students' mothers to vote yes. Literature explaining the propositions was distributed.
