The Community Concert Series will be held again this year with a planning meeting on November 1 at Cawelo Motel to discuss artists. Concerts will be in the evenings and not on Sundays. Shafter clubs are buying tickets and presenting some to students. Ticket prices are $3 for students and $6 for adults.
New residents in Shafter are Mr and Mrs John DOrio and children Jackie and Cindy from Chicago Illinois. DOrio has become assistant manager at the Cawelo Service Station owned by S A Camp. Last year Nadine Conner of the Metropolitan Opera Company worked with Rise Stevens in the Carmen production. Tickets may be bought by contacting Mrs Rolf Jacobsen Mrs Gordon Haycock Mrs Arthur Hemingson or Mrs John Peters to avoid a complete sellout.
Shafter High School lists 38 students on the honor roll after a six week period, from a total enrollment of 460. The average rate stands at 7.5 percent, down from 8 percent a year ago. Dozens of named students earned the points required for high honors, while others aim to improve in the next two grading periods to reach CSF status.
Mrs Katie Merkel leaves Shafter for Long Beach to visit daughters Mrs Diana Leach and Mrs Ruth Farrell. She will sail to Mobile to spend a month with son Capt Eddy Merkel and wife awaiting a new addition. Capt Merkel serves with Brookley FLD in Mobile.
Mr and Mrs Millard Barton Collins announce the birth of a son on Wednesday October 20 at Kern General Hospital. The infant weighed 7 pounds and has been named Millard Barton Jr. The Collins recently moved from Texas and reside at the Anderson Trailer Court in Shafter.
The H R Janzens of San Jose former Shafter residents who own a local funeral home visit the George Nikkel residence with Mrs Nikkel. They attended the Mennonite Brethren Conference in Bakersfield and plan to return to their San Jose home tomorrow.
Judge Arch Beckes, a prominent county judge, has been confined to bed since a stroke in August and was moved to a Bakersfield hospital last Wednesday for closer laboratory checks due to a diabetic condition.
