The Shafter Twenty-thirties club is urged to start a yearly winter tree planting drive to beautify the town for generations. Proposals include planting a thousand trees and oleanders along the Shafter Cawelo parkway, plus adopting Santa Claus Town to boost Christmas spirit and bring happiness to local children.
The Shafter Stables profit from the racing year with Red Streak earning 50000 in season prize money. Notable races include second-place finishes at Hollywood Park and Roosevelt Raceway. Neuman Crawford and Camp & Lachenmaier horses will winter at home after Aurora Downs meets. Community Chest reports 4132 raised for welfare and youth programs.
Howard Henry Booth, 34, foreman at Em H Mettler Son farm for 11 years, died Wednesday from ailments attributed to Ethylene Chlorhydrin gas used while spraying seed potatoes at the Mettler refrigeration plant in Bakersfield. Three others from Shafter, Delbert Blakely 24 Lee Davis 63 and William Search 18, were hospitalized but survived and were released the next morning. Booth collapsed at 3 p m after a period of seeming recovery and was pronounced dead en route to hospital. A Mettler Farm spokesman said the gas was known to cause illness.
District Chairman Clarence Annin warned of rapid underground water depletion and the risk of being cut off from the Central Valley Project. He urged immediate action, noting canal work from White River to Poso Creek could isolate the Shafter-Wasco district. A four member investigation panel will report findings to the board.
Shafter resident Mary Roben Autrey born on the farm near Rufo Oklahoma recounts 24 children with 19 reaching adulthood and a nephew by marriage Gene Autrey, while living with daughter Annie Williams in North Shafter. Her stories span a life of work, tragedy, and family lore including a son killed in World War I and a grim moonshine episode.
The Kiwanis Club of Shafter announces the sixth annual Hallowe'en parade set for October 31 with cash awards across high school, grammar school, and younger divisions. Prizes range from 40 to 5 dollars for floats, 15 to 5 for Sunday School entries, and 3 to 1 for decoration and costume contests. Scout troops and Campfire Girls units receive 5 dollars for participation.
Mr and Mrs M A Scales visit Long Beach this week with daughter Bonnie and family. Their daughter and son in law John B Nugent welcome a baby boy named George Michael born September 24.
Hundreds in Shafter follow the Battle For Prizes with a $250 top award and a $25 merchandise prize. After week one Leon Pitts led with 70 000 votes, while Tommy Smith trailed closely with 42 500 votes. Each 5 000 votes equals one new or renewing subscription. several contenders aim for first by week’s end November 22. Vote tallies will appear next Tuesday.
