The Shafter Press subscription contest tallied last Saturday showing Leon Pitts leading with 70 000 votes. Tommy Smith held second with 42 500 ahead by a strong margin, while Lawrence Kattenhorn moved with 22 500. Paul Garrett and J T Badgett trailed in fourth and fifth with 11 125 and 10 000 votes.
Two Shafter youths, George Cooper and Frank Guidera, train with Cal-Aggie team on Shafter field and take part in Saturdays 14-0 win over Whittier College. Cooper, 18, 185 pounds, fourth string center. Guidera, 20, 195 pounds, third-string guard. Competition prize of 25 dollars in merchandise offered weekly by the Press with a 250 dollar cash and merchandise total as first prize. Contest runs through November 22 with nominations from friends and reporting required by 1 p.m. next Saturday.
A baby girl weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces was born last week to Mr and Mrs Robert Mitchell at Cottage Hospital Oildale. Mr and Mrs Floyd Cason welcomed a baby girl weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces at Cottage Hospital Oildale.
The local bakery offers party ready treats and special baked goods to enhance social gatherings. Offerings include tailored dessert platters and festive pastries prepared by Joe's Topper Bakery for events.
The American Legion plans a Halloween Masquerade Dance for teens at the Women's Clubhouse on Friday October 31 with music by Paul Garrett and his Orchestra. Costumes prize added for girls and boys, regualr street clothes allowed, 8 pm to midnight, 50 cents per person.
George Wallace Slaton and William Junior Sullivan, ages 18 and 21, were jailed Friday night on charges of impersonating the opposite sex and causing a public disturbance. They appeared before City Judge Frank Shaw. Slaton previously faced two runaway arrests, Sullivan recently faced intoxication charges. The pair, agricultural workers living at Harris Camp in North Shafter, were arrested around 7:30 p.m. and the case continues.
Blake Witcher of the 16th Township police reports active investigation into Friday’s cotton thefts near Shafter and four dog poisonings at Smiths Corners. About 500 pounds were stolen from Andy Nightingale and another 500 from Olan Fenderson, with signs the same parties caused both losses. Four dogs died and a fifth vanished at Groves Camp. authorities warn of potent strychnine-like poison and urge immediate reporting of thefts.
Six more arrests by the local police for various offenses still indicate that intoxication is the outstanding cause. Two men were arrested for intoxication and disturbing the peace Friday night. Tenney Wilson Wells and Walter L. Emery appeared before City Judge Frank Shaw Monday morning. Wells case continued until today, while Emery, who has a regular succession of similar offenses, was set to return.
Generals routed Arroyo Grande 6 to 0 in a decisive victory. The win showcases early-season form as the club dominates offensively and defensively, setting a strong tone for upcoming matchups.
A capacity crowd of about 1700 filled the new bleachers as Shafter High School defeated Arroyo Grande 6 to 0 in a fiercely contested football game. The gold juggernaut’s defense held firm, delivering the team’s straight win.
The Shafter Generals edged Arroyo Grande by a narrow margin in a hard fought gridiron clash. Vernon Edwards scored all Colonels points and Tom Fletcher starred on defense and special teams as Shafter fought back from an early deficit.

The Shafter 20-30 Club announced winners of the fire prevention essay contest. Opal Evans won first in Shafter High School, Barbara Becker took second, George Tidwell led Richland and Maple Grammar entrants. Honorable mentions went to several Richland and Maple students.
