Last Saturday October 19 featured a pancake breakfast by the Shafter Kiwanis drawing a long line of diners. Across town at the high school a Centennial Fun Run and Stroll drew a large crowd of runners and walkers.
The weekend festivities at Mannel Park showcased a full program from Friday tailgate and fireworks to Saturday stages featuring the Barton Bros Ron Saylor Elvis Keith Starrh Unity Winterguard Folkloric Dancers Tigers Taekwondo Wasco Steel Drums and the Lord of the Cello. A Centennial Fun Run drew participants as a Vultee Valiant flyover and a crop duster thrilled spectators along Central Avenue.
On Sunday October 20 a large crowd gathered at Shafter Veterans Hall for the Civic Luncheon during Centennial Weekend. City officials and Chamber of Commerce members heard remarks from John Guinn and Mayor Jon Johnston, with Cathy Prout recognizing volunteers and detailing a time capsule to be opened in 25 years.
