Shafter Celebrates 100 Years With Weekend Events
A year of promotion culminates in a October 17 to 20 centennial celebration in Shafter. Highlights include a melodrama at Fred Starrh Performing Arts Center, campus tours at Shafter High, an alumni tailgate, a free fireworks show, Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, a downtown parade, a fun run, and museum tours at the Shafter Depot Museum.

The Volunteer Senior Outreach Program helps seniors 55 and older with Medi Cal Medicare and more. The U S Postal Service marks Shafter's 1000 birthday with a free commemorative postmark event. A temporary station at Manne Park noon to 3 PM and at Shafter Depot Museum 3 to 5 PM on October 19 will cancel First Class stamps with the centennial postmark.

Stage Two hosts Keith Starrh at 1:00 Unity Winterguard at 2:00 Wasco Steel Drums at 3:00. Free kids activities include Tug of War Sack Races Relay games inflatable bounce stagecoach obstacle course and Midway games.

Shafter hosts job fair amid looming CCF reopening
City officials expect a state contract to reopen the California Correctional Facility in Shafter after November 2011 closure. If signed, about 640 inmates would be housed with upgrades including a new fence and outdoor visitation area. Job fair drew many applicants for cooks, officers, clerks and other posts as Shafter eyes an economic boost.
