Explorers Witness Ordinance Test On China Lake Trip

Driver of the Month Award for Army Overseas

Soldier receives long service award for overseas duty
A 24 year old senior sound observer with the 1st Observation Battalion 25th Artillery entered the Army in May 1958 after basic at Fort Ord and prior duty at Fort Sill Oklahoma. He arrived overseas last October. He attended Shafter High School two years. His wife Patsy Sue and eight percent month old son Denny live in Bakersfield. The award was presented October 5 by Major Carl L Long Battalion Commander.

Funeral services were held October 19 for John Ley Self who died in Bakersfield General Hospital. A retired farmer from the Shafter area, he was born January 7, 1869 in Natural Dam Arkansas. Rev. A B Farmer of the Assembly of God Church officiated. Interment followed in Shafter.
