A Farm Census Crew Leader completes training and will return to his district to recruit and train census takers for the start of the field canvass on November 18, 1959.
John Enns of Shafter California becomes a new member of the Kern Farm Home Administration committee. County Supervisor John D. Webster notes Enns brings farming and business experience to review loan applications with Bakersfield colleagues Gilbert C. Dalton as Chairman and T. J. Russell. The panel must approve acts before funds move forward and helps tailor loan policies to local needs.
About 150 people visited Shafter's Fire Station last week for an open house marking Fire Prevention Week. The display featured fire equipment, free coffee and doughnuts, and Smokey the Bear. Smokey also toured Lerdo Primary School distributing fire prevention literature.
Helen Buller 60 a Richland School cafeteria employee for 18 years died after a lingering illness on October 11 at a Bakersfield hospital where she had been confined since September 1. Born October 14 1899 in Kansas she lived in Shafter 24 years and home with sister Jesse at 162 Beth Eden. Survivors include sisters Mary Gaede Shafter Tonz Shafter George Ben Kansas and Jake Oklahoma. Services were held October 13 at First Mennonite Church Shafter with Rev John Bartell officiating. Interment in Shafter Cemetery. Armstrong Mortuary handled arrangements.
The American Legion Auxiliary in Shafter announced fall and winter events after a October 6 meeting at Mrs. Erma McCoy's home. A rummage sale at Smith's is set for the 31st, with a picnic planned at Mooney's Grove for Fresno Hospital veterans. H. W. Pat Kelly will speak on legislature at the October 20 gathering to finalize plans.
Services were held Oct 12 at 2 00 p m in the Zarene Church for Mrs N Emaline Hearn who died Oct 8 in Bakersfield Hospital She lived at 30380 Land Avenue Rev John Esterline officiated and burial followed in Zarene Cemetery Surviving relatives include sisters Anna Lee Osborn Nancy Maroner and Nora Chitwood and brothers Albert Eddie and Dessie Stover all of Oklahoma.
Shafter Lions Club completes packaging of over 2000 bulbs for door to door sale on Wednesday October 21 to fund sight conservation programs. Mr Dave Merkel says sales run about five percent under retail with territory assignments made. Waldrom directs the sight program as residents are urged to light porch lights after 6 30 p m.
Commander Foote of California's American Legion named Earl Wipf of 219 California Street Shafter as a member of the State Housing Commission. Foote said he will attend each state meeting of these commissions during his term as Allied Legion leader and representative.
Shafter High’s Generals fell 53 to 7 to a powerful South High team. Roy Schacht connected on a Pike pass to Brent for a 75 yard gain, and Jim Webb kicked the extra point as the skid extended to three losses in the 1959 season.
Shafter faced a tough setback as Schacht was injured in a sideline pileup late in the game. It remained unclear if the star five star general could play next Friday against Taft. Taft beat Lindsay 46-13 in their previous outing. In the prelim, Shefter's Colonels lost 27-0 to the South High Raiders.
Two local leaders Earl Smittcamp of Clovis and Paul Enns of Bakersfield attend a national four day Farm Credit meeting in Washington. They aim to share views on farm credit and push for improved facilities and services for farmers at the lowest possible cost.
Volunteers gather at Shafter Motel at 7 a m on Tuesday October 20 to finalize plans for the One Day fund drive supporting Scouting in Kern County. Officials stress Scouting lowers juvenile delinquency and funds provide materials, camps, and year round activities for Cub Scouts and Explorers.
Marine Pvt Lonnie Woods son of Mr and Mrs John W Woods of Shafter California completed recruit training Oct 13 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego California. The 11 week course covered all basic military subjects and infantry weapons. He will be assigned to a unit for further infantry training or to Marine Corps schools.
Shafter High School held a CSF awards assembly to honor students achieving California Scholarship Federation membership. Brenda Boel spoke on Girls State at UC Davis in June and Philip Anderson described Boys State activities in Sacramento in July. Mrs. Amelia Dawe sponsored SHS CSF for 1959 60.
Ivo Bud Keyser will head the Bakersfield based Kern County campaign for the Children's Home Society, which aims to raise 19200 to support operations this year. The drive covers Kern Kings Inyo and Tulare Counties served by the Bakersfield office. Keyser plans to start October 26 and will announce the Kern County quota beforehand. Members by class include Philip Anderson Carol Becker Marilyn Gaede Neal Janzen and others.
A 1959 Chicago letter discusses a so called Test for Normalcy with references to hospitals world affairs schools and religion. The writer mentions staff reactions and a joke by Jimmy Tucker Jr. and notes Shafter voters will decide if elementary school roofs are provided. Continued on Page 8.
