The County Fire Department battled a cotton trailer blaze on Lerdo two miles east of Cawelo. Arriving about 9 p.m., firefighters extinguished the flames and limited loss to about a quarter of the cotton, with no damage to the trailer.

The wage for cotton picking rises to three dollars per hundred pounds and larger crews are urgently needed as growers push to maintain speed. A Commerce Department report on cotton ginning shows 1,552,858 bales ginned in the United States through September 19, compared with 1,255,327 a year earlier, signaling a likely larger yield.

The Shafter City Council approved renaming Santa Fe Way to Central Valley Highway as part of a regional plan from Bakersfield to Selma via Shafter Wasco Corcoran and Hanford. The week adds nine more arrests in the city with intoxication and related charges leading. John W. Tuberville 36 faced $240 or 120 days in county jail, choosing the jail term. Cecil Williamson 36 paid $250 fine with a suspended 180 day sentence. James Mack Skelly 48 fined $50 and a 30 day sentence suspended. Louis Ross Colvard 44 fined $50 and a suspended 30 day term. Dela Rosa Paradez 24 booked on intoxication and disturbing the peace with a $10 fine. Lawrence W. Frazier 47 charged with intoxication and probation violation released on $50 bail.
The Shafter High School Generals football squad and coaches Dan Bledsoe and Dusty Rhoads were honor guests at the Shafter Rotary Club luncheon. Captain Tom Fletcher and student body president Wayne Hill spoke. Fletcher introduced players including Bill Sharp and Reet Duke among others. Al Ingraham presided.
The Shafter 20-30 club plans the largest home decoration program in town history for the holiday season. Neighborhoods Wall tract Mannel tract and southern Shafter vie for top prizes in homes businesses and schools divisions with cash awards. Farm homes get a special judged section by application while all residents are urged to participate in the festive display.
Reuben David Dixon 21, Navy petty officer 3/c, killed in the South Pacific on November 18, 1942, enroute home aboard the funeral ship Hondo Knot for burial in Shafter. Born August 13, 1921 in Alex Oklahoma, he studied at Bacone College. Survived by Clyde and Mrs Dixon and extended family. burial planned in Shafter Cemetery.
Shafter Kiwanis hears Holger Hansen describe the development of Shafter High School farm to 40 acres. He outlines crop rotation, farm management, fertilization, and general farming as courses, noting students’ livestock show successes at Kern County Fair events.

The Shafter Motel is sold to Ralph Boels of Bakersfield. He will take over management including dining room lounge and rooms on November 1. Boels has run a Bakersfield cafe and Edison restaurant and distributed Coca Cola in Shafter. Jack Zimmerman to take rest after transition, with four years as manager.
Oakland couple Mr. and Mrs. Lynn A. Floyd travel to Shafter to visit daughter Mrs. Bud Neuman and meet their new granddaughter Lynette.
