Shafter Mercantile Company one of the town’s oldest department stores, now owned by Arthur J. Hemingson. Since 1943 Hemingson expanded the shop offering clothing for all ages, blankets, houseware, luggage, shoes, Boy Scout gear, infants items, and seasonal toys, with roots traced to county recorder Charles Shomate who first owned the business in 1925 before passing to Herbert Midgley.
