Campaigners led by Ernie Panero plan a one day 1950 Community Chest kickoff Monday after a breakfast at Lee's Dining Room. The drive aims to raise 4450 dollars for character building organizations with 85 workers and a high turnout expected. Details of Chest benefits will be explained at the breakfast.
A contingent of over 85 workers is mobilized for Shafter’s 1950 Community Chest one day drive led by campaign manager Ernie Panero. Breakfast begins at 7 30 a m with staff including Advanced gifts committee chaired by A G Mortimore and team captains and numerous workers. The program features Boy Scouts Campfire Girls and recreation directors stressing Chest funding needs and local youth projects.
A Kern County TB x ray unit will tour Shafter next week to screen all residents 15 and older. Mrs G Ohlsson says cooperation from downtown businesses and volunteers will help complete the sweep, with sites at Myrick's Corner, Smith's Corner, Central and Main, and James Street and rare avenue across several days.
Rotary International director George Worster of Angeles will speak on International Service at the Shafter Rotary Club Nations Day program Tuesday. Hundreds of Rotarians from the San Joaquin Valley are expected to attend as Worster makes his first inland empire trip. club president John Revell notes Worster is president and general manager of Yellow Cab Company of California and active in civic affairs in the southland.
Fire prevention will be the topic of today’s Chamber of Commerce meeting. Ernie Hofman, secretary, announced. Speakers for the occasion include Arthur Craig, county fire chief, and Albert Fink, city chief.
Postmaster George E. Guenther announces tighter postal service in Shafter due to budget cuts. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. lobby 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. otherwise. Mail drops must meet rail schedule times. southbound and northbound cut times listed. Staff reduced from 10 to seven, with two city carriers and four daily deliveries.
The Shafter Defense Council issued a call for more men to enlist as volunteer numbers fall. Executive Secretary Frank G Shaw reported only 18 new enrollments last week, bringing the city total to under 90. A car fire on Central Avenue in downtown Shafter tied up traffic after noon Tuesday. The incident caused about 35 damage to the vehicle and was reported by the county fire department. Volunteers from the city assisted as firefighters battled the blaze in the car owned by James Herron of Wasco.
Glenn O. Nay president of the Shafter Public Utility District will attend an American Water Works convention in San Diego next week. Topics include water conservation and the impact of atomic energy on national water systems. Sack Harris utility district superintendent is expected to accompany Nay.
Whitney Tharin of the National Potato Council urged Kern county growers at Shafter Memorial Hall that cotton offers profits for 1950 to 1952. He cited a shift from surplus to shortage, no quotas or penalties for 1951-52, and that planted cotton will count toward base acreage for future allotments, with aims to reach 16 million bales nationwide.
The Shafter High School FFA chapter bought 12 Duroc Jersey feeder pigs from Karpe Greenfield Ranch to resell to chapter members. Pigs will be shown at the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles November 25 to 30. Members showing include Jackie Wray and others with double and single pig counts.
Twelve freshmen boys were initiated as Greenhands in the Shafter High School FFA Chapter during ceremonies in the homemaking room on Oct. 16. Stanley Buller, FFA president, directed the initiation of Billy Chapman Johnny DeVincenzo Leroy Kirschenmann Leroy Thompson Harold Bittle David Killough Bill Lamas Bob Bartley Charles Carter Kirk Fitzpatrick James Myrick and Harold Nixon. Elliot Garrison, assistant advisor, awarded prizes for the best tied four in hand tie to co winners Bill Lamas and David Killough. A chili and bean dinner preceded the initiation, prepared by the Homemaking class under Miss Wanda Cain.
Congressman Thomas Werdel scored the UN battle in two Shafter talks addressing Kern county potato growers and the Shafter Rotary Club during United Nations Week. He called Korea an unconstitutional act by the executive and warned of home and global difficulties over the UN treaty while urging a peaceful world policy.
The Richland School District board refused a released time religious program for pupils despite public letters pro and con. Superintendent Bruce Crawford and Trustee Rolf Jacobsen discussed expanding the cafeteria from 700 to about 2200 capacity to serve more students by the 1951 fall semester. The board also approved installing classroom clocks in the main building under President Ed Kirschmann.
The Shafter Kiwanis will sponsor its ninth annual Halloween parade and show on Oct 31 at 6 30 pm in downtown Shafter. Prizes total 40 for best float and 15 to 5 for top costumes plus 15 10 and 5 for younger divisions. Bands from Richland and Shafter high schools will perform and participants from Maple Kern Academy Lerdo and Rio Bravo are invited.
Lisle Laughlin Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Lisle Laughlin of Shafter, a Navy sailor, is expected to return home for Christmas. He served a year in the Philippines after World War II, reenlisted last August, and is currently aboard the USS Leo 160 miles from Korea. He is due to sail home soon and will take a 30 day leave for the holiday.
The Richland PTA announced the early November deadline for next spring's music scholarship. A Richland School music student with outstanding progress will win 150 dollars, funded by the Shafter-Wasco Ginning Company for the past two years. Judges include Martha Gloeckler Fred Curtain Beulah Bartlett Marion Haycock and Charles Jones Kern county supervisor of music. The first winner in 1949 was Johnny De Vincenzo for piano, last year’s co winners were Marlene Enns for piano and Norma Craig for flute.
Cotton growers will view the latest in cotton mechanization at the Shafter Experimental Farm field day sponsored by the Cotton Mechanization Advisory Committee. UC Farm Adviser William N. explains new mechanical pickers, late cultivation gear, and weed control by flame. Harrison and weed control tests—with chemical and mechanical methods—will be highlighted to boost yields and grades.
David J. Unruh, 60, of 30134 Lerdo Road, was hit by a pickup at Central avenue and James street last Friday night. Driver Leslie Osteen, 46, Route 1, Box 298, cited for pedestrian right-of-way violation. Unruh transported to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield by Flickinger-Janzen ambulance.
The Shafter High School Generals defeated the Woodlake Tigers 27 to 0 in a league football game last Friday night. Adjustments by Coach Dan Bledsoe moved Freddie Houston to quarterback and John Kelly to right end as the Generals overwhelmed Woodlake with strong defense and productive drives. Paul Cato scored on a two yard rush with Vernon Edwards delivering key carries as the Generals built their lead through the game.
