Fire at Plains LPG refinery in Kern County tower
Firefighters, including Engine 67, responded to a vehicle crash report and found a 100 foot tall heating tower with thick black smoke. A second alarm was set as crews cooled surrounding equipment and allowed the burning oil product to burn out. Cause under investigation with electrical malfunction not ruled out, while residents are advised to check home electrical systems.

The Golden Empire Region Porsche Club held an October 6 event at Minter Field in Shafter drawing Bakersfield members and others from the region. More than 100 cars, from classics to modern models, took to the track built from airport strips and taxiways, reviving a long‑standing club relationship with the airstrip.

Dean's visit to Minter Field remembered in historic race
James Dean attended Kern County Championships Racing at Minter Field driving a Porsche Speedster. He finished third overall and won his class in the F division as part of a Sports Car Club of America sanctioned circuit.
