The Richland PTA hosts a carnival and barbecue on Thursday October 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Richland Activity Center. The 12 Harvest Home Show runs October 17-19 at Kern County Fairgrounds with daily hours, Senior Day Friday, and a $3 general admission. Proceeds support museum construction.
Shafter moves to form a corporation to market a new software called CLEAR for rapid emergency alerts and coordinated evacuations. The city will own rights and finance the project with profits first repaying costs, then funding a reserve. Fran Florez leads the board with Garry Nelson Barrick as director amid final Articles of Incorporation.
The Shafter City Council authorized staff to issue a Notice of Phase III in the 1999 EDA Grant Sanitary Sewer Project. The line runs from north of Seventh Standard Road toward Lerdo Highway near Minter Airport, following Zachary Avenue and crossing the Friant canal. Phase II costs came in under budget at 1,122,404.92 dollars against a 1.2 million dollar budget.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce offers 20 ticket draws for a 2003 Ford Mustang. Tickets at 20 each are sold downtown at Fabric Jewelry Store or Shafter City Hall and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the noon drawing at the town square. Only 600 tickets sold as of Oct 8, odds described as good.
Shafter Youth Center builds toward opening with CAP and city funding from the California Youth Authority and local sources. City Manager John Guinn compares the $1.3 million state plus $360,000 city investment to per-child costs of incarceration, arguing long term youth benefits justify the expense over 50 years. A kickoff gathering led to the formation of a group from each table to organize a basketball free throw event.
Unincorporated Westside parcel outside Shafter seeks annexation to allow a housing project. Annexation No 75 would permit 3.5 dwelling units per 38.88 acres in a Estate zone with interior lots 10,800 sq ft and corner lots 11,500 sq ft. Application moves to LAFCO after CEQA ruling.
