Supervisor Jon McQuiston met with Kern County community leaders at Fat and Sassy’s Airport Cafe to hear concerns in Shafter and surrounding areas. He cited Sacramento’s transition team under Arnold Schwarzenegger and warned against gridlock if reforms fall through. Discussions covered VLF abolition impacts, dairies buffer zones, water availability, and regional projects benefiting Valley districts. Lou Gomez invited chambers of commerce to the next lunch meeting.
Growth in the Richland School District has leveled off after the first weeks but Superintendent Lyle Mack warns of a surge around January. Enrollment stood at 2,977 at the October 13 board meeting as the district implements K 3 class size reductions and plans a November 17 workshop to review overcrowding data and future needs including a new elementary school.
New rules ban solid fuels including wood logs and pellets when air quality is unhealthy with an Air Quality Index of 151 or higher. Restrictions apply for 24 hours from midnight to midnight on the affected day, vary by district, and fines may be issued for violations.
