Teachers held conferences at Richland Intermediate School on October 6 7 and 10 with 273 parents in attendance. Conferences focused on classroom work and parent involvement.
Community growth in Shafter accelerates from 1259 residents in 1940 to 10332 in the latest area survey. Reports by the Shafter Advisory Plan and Kern County Planning Commission project needs for new homes schools and classrooms, plus open meetings to discuss orderly growth.
Dr. John Revell of Shafter spoke before the Western District Dental Society in Santa Monica at Rider Hotel. He outlined a surgical technique for pre-orthodontic cases and unveiled a new method after seventeen years of study, noting the district as the largest in the Los Angeles area.
St Mark's Episcopal Church at 135 Shafter Avenue will start inquirers' classes on the teachings of the Church from October 19, 7 to 8 p.m. Rev. Edward L. Key will lead. Holy Communion is set for Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Luther Williams will celebrate. Sunday school and nursery will be available.
Chief Hanley Witcher states 14 arrests occurred over the weekend with charges spanning vagrancy to drunk driving. 21 traffic citations were issued as safety violations rise with winter driving. Shafter High School P.T.A. announces Back To School Night for October 21. Harold J. Corrie leads the event with dinner at 6 30 in the cafeteria followed by a general session and class visitation guided by the Inter Scholarship Federation. Parents will receive their child’s class schedules and learn about the year ahead.
Tom Carmody, Richland sixth grade teacher and Washington State College alumnus, grew up in Alaska and Idaho. He shifted from an intended non teaching path to education after college contacts and cites favorable Richland conditions, with athletic interests and family teaching roots shaping his career.
The Kern County Council, Boy Scouts of America, starts a fund drive to support Shafter Maple area scouting with a breakfast at the Shafter Motel dining room at 7:00 a.m. on October 28. Harvey Gaede chairs the effort with assistants Phil Clarkin, Ted Vignolo, Mert Wiedmann, and Clyde Johnston. last year 291 boys in 13 units benefited from local chartered institutions and 60 volunteers.

Funeral services for Justina Foth 83 were held at Armstrong Mortuary at 10 a.m. Tuesday Oct. 14. She died Oct. 11 in a Bakersfield Hospital after living in Kern County 40 years with time in Shafter. Officiant Rev. Richard Diede, interment Shafter Cemetery. She leaves two daughters Emma Ferguson and Susan Dequine, brothers Gerhardt Thiessen and John Thiessen, grandchildren Gordon Graham Dejorie Blackwell Bert Dequine and many great grandchildren.
