Thirty Shafter High School students joined peers from Kern County high schools at Bakersfield College for a full day speech clinic on October 2. Demonstrations covered debate extemporaneous impromptu and interpretive speech with groups rotating between sessions. Cecil Briscoe sponsors the Shafter group.

Niece Hicks Teaches Science at Shafter High School

Ben T Hicks from Elkhart Kansas teaches general science this year at Shafter High School. He is Southwestern College graduate with a BA in science and earned MS from the University of Colorado. He studied at Kansas State College and Kansas University in summer sessions and held NSF funded graduate work in Colorado during 1957 58. He previously taught two years in Ton and eight years in Ulysses and coached football eight years. He resides in Shafter with wife Bessie and their four children Sandy Joyce Cecila and John.

Theatre in Books at Branch Library What Goes on Behind Curtain

Shafter Library presents What Goes on Behind the Curtain a curated bookshelf guided by branch librarian Mrs Harriet Mason. Two notable volumes by Daniel Blum Great Stars of the American Theatre and A Pictorial History of the American Theatre showcase portraits biographies and showbiz milestones from Maude Adams to Yul Brynner and Julie Harris across fifty years. The librarian distributes a book list on the world of the theatre titled What Goes on Behind the Curtain.

Six judges oversaw four events including reading impromptu informal ad and radio news broadcasting. Students entered two events. The festival stressed experience and preparation over competition for inexperienced speakers.

Returning to Shafter After Marine Corp

Sergeant and Mrs. Robert Turner plan to return to Shafter within two weeks after his two terms with the Marines. Turner served at Paris Island and Camp Lejeune and took MP training and clerk courses. He has begun flying lessons and aims to earn his wings before coming home. If Shafter suits them, the newlyweds may settle here.

Mennonite Brethren Bid 55 Members Farewell

The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church held a farewell service for 55 members preparing to join the Wasco congregation in a new church. Rev. Warner Kroeker of Harvey and Abe Ediger addressed plans, hymns were sung, and a benediction followed. The Wasco church invites the community to attend their first service at 10 40 a m on Sunday.

Changes in Mail Schedules in San Joaquin Valley

The San Joaquin Valley shifts mail operations with Santa Fe Trains 6 and 63 ending and HPO arrivals in Shafter canceled. Shafter will handle mail only at night from Sept 29, exchanging with Northbound train 7 at 8 40 p.m. and HPO 3 at 3 10 a.m. The plan aims for overnight delivery across the San Francisco to Los Angeles corridor.
