A call to rural voters to oppose Measure No 13 and tell urban allies to defeat it. The piece argues the State Senate, largely rural, has blocked reckless spending and radical laws, warning passage would empower big city racketeers and erode checks on state government.
Claude Williams aged 48 of Shafter and Pauline Boyd aged 23 of ale were honored October 13 at a birthday party and family gathering at the old Poplar School. A bountiful dinner with fried chicken, salads, three birthday cakes, ice cream and beverages marked the event. Williams had been ill but was well for the celebration, with many relatives from Shafter and Oildale in attendance.
Shafter art enthusiasts joined Bakersfield Tuesday to hear Indian artist Clemente Diaz demonstrate Tomala Indian painting and listen to Elizabeth De Cervantes discuss Tomala life and work. The event, hosted by the Bakersfield Art Association, took place in the visual aids room of the new high school auditorium with Mrs. Fred Emerson as program chair. Local attendees included Dr. A. W. Gaede and daughter Beatrice, Jean Stoller, Mrs. Mable Sherring, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Smith, George Tidwell, and Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Eckman.
Lewis McCaslin returned to Valley near Tehachapi and harvested a four point buck.

Shafter High travels to Strathmore for their second league contest. Generals aim to rebound after a Lindsay loss, with Scales passing and Hair and Beese as co-captains leading offense and defense. Strathmore, coming off a 19 0 loss to Exeter, fields a strong five man line and aerials from Schacht and Heber.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kadel have recently moved into a new residence at 472 Klassen Drive. The note records the address change and relocation of the couple to their new home.

Maureen Mettler, six, was honored at a belated birthday party Tuesday at her parents Atlantic Avenue home. Guests enjoyed games with a prize to Carol Becker, a fishing game, pink and white refreshments, and several mothers and relatives attended.

Mrs Hanson entertained her bridge club Tuesday at her Stone Street home with a Halloween themed dessert bridge. High bridge prize went to Mrs Floyd Cooper and consolation to Mrs Christine Roscamp. Birthday girl Mrs Joe Frizzell received a cake as members sang.
A party of 400 ex servicemen from the 62nd Armored Field Artillery Division will attend a three day reunion in Phoenix Arizona starting Thursday morning. The unit spent 425 days overseas and 33 months in combat beginning with the Casablanca landing.
The Richland Parent-Teacher Association held a large benefit barbecue at Manuel Park drawing 600 plus attendees. Despite 375 tickets sold, many unticketed guests were fed after waiting by the bonfire, with about 550 dollars net for lunches medical care and glasses for needy children.
James B Nicol died at Bakersfield Hospital Thursday after a months long illness. A native of Belgrave Ontario Canada he had lived in California 38 years. He left three sons W E Nicol Shafter Tony Nicol Los Angeles and J Elwood Ontario and a sister Mrs Mar
Mrs Ida Mathis traveled to Phoenix to witness her son 1st Lt Jim Mathis receive the D A C award for outstanding service. He is the first Army recipient and third overall in the United States, with World War II credentials including Anzio El Alamein and the Po Valley campaigns. He bears the Croix de Guerre Bronze Star and Purple Heart after severe wounds and also observed an air show and a military wedding during her visit.
About 20 to 30 club members attended the Richland PTA barbecue at Manuel Park on a Wednesday evening. A program followed at Motel Canelo with Kenny Howell presiding. Ed De Mello presented the film Appointment in Tokyo about Army Navy and Marine Corps efforts in the war and the Philippines through Japanese surrender.
The Junior Women's Club hosted its annual rush tea on Wednesday evening at the Woman's Club House. The harvest scene featured pumpkins filled with fruit and vegetables, candle holders shaped as rosy red apples, and pastel dahlias with white tapers. President Annabel Thompson presided at the tea table with Junior Past President Ruth Handel. Vivian Neuman led the evening with assistants Louise Malory, Helen Neessen, Pat Neuman, and Violette Neuman. Guests included Mesdames Ryland Jacobus, Carl Gunnarson, George Geisler, Jim Maquist, John Channeson, Channing Crandall, Dick Larsen, Robert McClain, Howard Ferguson, and Harry Blum.

Gloria Janzen wins first prize in the Shafter High School fire prevention essay contest sponsored by the Shafter 20-30 club with Art Craig of the Kern County Fire Department assisting. Barbara Neely takes second. honorable mentions go to Betty Wilcoxon Barbara Becker June Nikkel and Lloyd Handel.
Californians serving overseas in occupied territories are deprived of the right to vote. M. C. Hermann of the California VFW urges national action and asks J. Rufus Klawans to introduce legislation in January to restore service members ballot privileges. Hermann notes complaints from armed forces abroad in Germany and Japan.
Mesdames John J. Peters and Joe Frizzell are named chairmen of the Christmas seal sale in Shafter under the Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association, succeeding Mrs. De Burns who led the effort previously.
