The Shafter Kiwanis Club schedules its annual Hallowe'en parade for Monday night November 1 with Jack Hill as master of ceremonies. Joe Frizzell leads as general chairman as committees plan a larger event, featuring multiple divisions and prizes to be announced later.
Shafter Kiwanis Club held its annual ladies night at Motel Cawelo where wives staged a humorous program. Mrs. Jack Hill presided. Mrs. Earl Weil led fines, and Mrs. Art Hemingson directed songs. A robe review featured robes worn by members, with humorous courtroom skits by Bill Carpenter. Guests included Gene Guenther, Vance Hill, L. W. Fike, and others.
Figures released in Sacramento show Kern County with 15 219 registered voters and 75 279 eligible to vote in the November 2 general election. Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan lists 13 counties ahead of Kern, including Los Angeles San Francisco Alameda San Diego San Bernardino Santa Clara Contra Costa Sacramento Fresno San Mateo Riverside Orange and San Joaquin.
Rev Gordon Baker of the Colonial Congregational Church in Los Angeles will occupy the pulpit next Sunday morning at the Union Congregational Church in the city.
Marvin Weidenbach, Central Market manager, joins Shafter Police and earns credit for a rapid apprehension of Jake Henry Neufeld, 39, laborer, after a morning incident at the police station. Neufeld allegedly passed a $10 personal check at a local bank prior to the arrest.
Mrs. C. E. Fenderson returned to Shafter with a ticket for over parking after chalk marks showed she backed three spaces beyond her original spot. In court she faced a choice of paying the dollar fine or appearing before the judge as she seeks clarity on re parking rules in Bakersfield.
Two local youths escaped death when their light pickup left the road between Buttonwillow and Taft and plunged over a 30 foot embankment. Jack Wood of Taft suffered serious head and possible internal injuries at Kern Emergency Hospital in Bakersfield. James Guen of Shafter recovered at home from minor injuries. Patrol says the left door opened and Wood lost control while trying to close it as the truck rolled multiple times and was demolished.
Over the weekend and Monday morning five men pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Luther Cook 39 Shafter and Floyd Gage 55 Bakersfield were fined 35 and 50 dollars with suspended sentences. Andrew Adams 68 Shafter William Morris 41 Smith Corners and Lanham Brown 40 Cisco were each given fines or short jail terms.
Carl Hawkins 32, foreman of the LB and B ranch at Tehachapi and part owner of Lachenmaier Brothers and Ed Brown of Shafter, was killed early Saturday in a hunting accident near Durango Colorado. Witnesses say Hawkins, elk hunting with Jake Ratslaff of Shafter, wiped sweat from his brow and a high velocity bullet went through his forehead. Hawkins leaves a wife and four children.
W. R. Woollomes chairman of Kern County supervisors called Proposition 13 a menace to the valley and urged a strong no vote. He argued it would strip rural senators for metropolitan areas harming roads water and schools. State and civic groups have voiced opposition to Prop 13.
Dr A W Gaede of Shafter described his 18 month stay in Paraguay highlighting Dutch Canadian and Russian refugee colonies. He detailed primitive living conditions with adobe homes earthen floors thatched roofs, scarce horses and wagons, and limited utilities aside from a Philadelphia headquarters. He noted local colonies govern themselves have churches and schools, and that a ship with 1700 refugees is enroute to settle there.
Shafter High School Generals blanked Strathmore Spartans 26 to 0 as Beese and Hair led a dominant offense and stifling defense. In the prelim, Shafter Colonels topped Strathmore B’s 13 to 7, with Jerry Johns scoring and Tom Kelly adding the extra point. The Colonels prepare to meet Exeter next Friday night.
Mrs. John H. Revell announces an Oct 20 post noon meeting at 2 p.m. in the Woman’s Club House. Guest speaker is Leonard McKaig of Bakersfield, speech and debate coach at Bakersfield Junior College. Members will receive the 1948-49 club year book.
The Shafter Press reports the D.A.C. award given last week at Williams Field Arizona to 1st Lt. Jim Mathis. The chromatic watch honors the cadet flier judged most outstanding by flying academic and military aptitude. Mathis is the son of Ida Mathis a Richland School teacher. He has brothers Jerry and Joe. He arrived in Shafter for a short visit and left for Hamilton Field.
Week end visitors at the Trio and Dave Edmonds in Free both young men serve in the U S Navy Seabees stationed at Camp Rousseau Port Hueneme Tommy a Shafter resident entered the navy in 1946 and recently finished 18 months in Guam They are retraining on heavy equipment and will return to duty January 14.
