A sweeping tribute contrasts Columbus era wilderness with modern America. It extols the discovery as a prelude to a nation leading world production and democracy. The text frames America as a beacon and a tribute to its people’s courage and strength.
A Rotary Club briefing labeled Kern County potato growers as the "bad boys" for inflating farm program costs. Officials cited yield disparities and questioned equity of separate measures for Kern versus the rest of the nation. Discussion touched on irrigation pressure, alfalfa expansion, and soil nutrient replenishment amid sinking groundwater.
Shafter's Generals lose 12 to 7 at Lindsay in a hot 100 degree game. A final second plunge by Wentworth gave the Cardinals the winning score after a hard fought contest marred by penalties and missed conversions.
Shafter High School and its FFA chapter collected 60 ribbons and 50 on breeding sheep with 11 top placements including Everett Eyraud who earned multiple firsts. The school earned four firsts and several seconds across breeding sheep and show hogs. Other notable members were Bob Calder Kenneth Buller Kieth Burnquist and Charles Patrick with multiple ribbons in junior and FFA divisions. Burley Dooley led as advisor with Dean Flaming Eugene Schmidt and Duane Freeman among the hog exhibitors earning several prizes.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 from the Flickinger-Janzen mortuary for George Isaac, 73, of Shafter. He died Sunday at the Buena Vista Rest Home in Bakersfield where he had resided for many years. Rev. John Bartel will conduct the services. He is survived by two sons and four brothers, including John Isaac and Pete Isaac of Shafter, Frank Isaac of Denver, Cole and Dan Isaac of Dinuha.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for James Monroe Holt 54 who died at his Wasco home Thursday Interment followed at Shafter Cemetery He was a native of Marlow Oklahoma and survived by his widow Dora Viola three sons Harold Holt Bill and J B Holt all of Wasco and a daughter Miss Holt was 54 at death with services from Flickinger Janzen Mortuary.
The Shafter High School recreational division of the adult education program opens registration for gym classes tonight at 7. Instructor Lowell Todd announced the sessions will meet on Tuesdays as in previous years.
The Richland PTA hosts a community barbecue at Manuel Park tomorrow from 6 to 8 30 PM. Jack Battaglia handles the beef while Mrs Sylvia Baughman leads the cafeteria team. Kern County Land Company donated the meat. Proceeds fund PTA welfare for needy Shafter children including luncheon glasses and medical care. Tickets cost 1 for children 150 for adults with preschoolers admitted free. A musical program and possible bonfire enrich the evening.
Scotty Jones enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 22, 1948 in Portland Oregon. He resided in Shafter for 10 years and attended high school there. He ordered a subscription to the Press to keep up with local activities. His address is Pfc A E Jones B Co Signal Camp Del Mar Oceanside California.
Pvt. William H. Pierce son of Mrs. Eula Graves of Route 1 Shafter reenlisted for three years to continue his regular army career. The enlistment was recorded by the U S Army Recruiting Office at Fort Lewis Washington. Pierce returns to duty with the First Cavalry Division in the Far East after serving in Japan during World War II.
Harry West of Shafter was named to the Kern County Museum board of trustees to fill the vacancy caused by Ardis Walker resignation. The appointment was announced in Bakersfield last week by the Kern County Board of Supervisors.
Gene Adams of Richland School and Arleigh Johnson of Richland School won first prizes in the Fire Prevention Week poster contest sponsored by the Shafter 20-30 Club. Group I winners include Luella Trumble and others. Group II includes Arlene Kadel and others. Prizes and certificates will be awarded, with winning posters on display at local merchant windows. Kern County Fire Department chief Arthur B. Craig praises the entries and teacher support.
Homer L. Thomas of Route 1 Shafter serves aboard the repair ship USS Hector which earned the battle efficiency pennant and E for general excellence for the year ending July 1 1948. The red triangle meat ball pennant signals top ship performance and crew with six months on board receive an E patch and cash award. This peacetime navy practice was revived with the award.
The Community Chest committee will meet Friday October 15 at the Shafter Motel just after the Chamber of Commerce gathering. Officers will be elected and all interested are urged to attend.
Bob Haag aged 16 of Shafter won the Delano Wine and Harvest Festival amateur talent contest taking the $300 first prize. Haag is a pianist and organist for Shafter’s Union Congregational Church and previously won Kern County Talent Contest. Contestants came from Hanford Visalia Tulare Porterville Bakersfield McFarland Delano and Shafter. First prize outsized Horace Heidt’s weekly broadcast prize by $50.
A month-old Wasco child died when a truck rolled over after a child released the brake while playing near Pablo’s Store. Investigator Robert Phillips said a group of children were nearby. The baby, a Wasco native, is survived by parents and grandparents. Graveside rites were held at Shafter Cemetery.
Funeral services were conducted in Shafter Saturday morning from Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary for Joseph P. Casteel 72 of Smith Corners. He died Wednesday at his home on Bayless Street and was laid to rest in Shafter Cemetery. A native of Spinefield Missouri he had lived in Smith Corners for three months. He leaves a sister Nele Budd of Burlington Kansas and a nephew Charlie Casteel of Shafter.
