On a George Siemens ranch in Canada a bobcat wandered into a yard frightening his dogs Bell and Bruce. The intruder weighed about 40 pounds and was dispatched by the dogs after a brief pursuit. The incident remains puzzling as bobcats are uncommon in the area.
New residents in Maple include Joel Unruh his wife and three sons who moved to the Woods Stone ranch the former home of Willie Mitchell. Unruh works on the ranch. Eight year old Tommy is in Maple School third grade Joey in kindergarten and four year old Doug will start next year. The family previously lived in Wasco where Unruh sold Maple Leaf implements. Mitchell family moved last March to Shaw Avenue in Shafter near the Douglas Mitchells and the Amos family.
Shafter's Volunteer Fire Department marks the anniversary of its 1871 founding with an open house featuring Smokey the Bear and free coffee and donuts. The department also releases a new Code of Ethics stressing duty, fire prevention, and protection of life and property in the city.
The 1959 Kern County Fair drew an all time attendance of 214,796, up 34,921 from last year, with 50,437 Saturday gate and 16,102 Sunday gate. Events included golf and archery clinics, fitness contests, stunt acts, fashion shows, baton championships, mid get racing, Hollywood shows, model planes, kid contests, and a John Strong circus. The Junior Fat Stock sale featured 324 head of prime steers averaging 42 cents per pound.
Arvin High overcame Shafter’s Generals 27-25 in a non league clash as Arvin rallied from behind with key scores by Craven Bonds and a late 30 yard run by Russel Brown. Shafter’s Schacht Dixon and Ricketts provided the scoring thrust but Arvin held on next week.
Richland School District will ask residents to approve a $700000 bond issue to add classrooms and facilities at two sites. A preliminary layout by architect Ernest L. McCoy outlines a two campus plan to serve about 2300 students in 1961 1962, with bonds repaid over five years at about 70 cents per $100 of assessed value, roughly $20 yearly for an average $3000 home.
Most of the 1960 autos are on show with Chrysler Plymouth and Buick announcements pending. Local buyers see new models from Pontiac Imperial Oldsmobile Chevrolet and Corvair as staff share excitement and pride in the arrival of fresh designs and features. Continued on page 13.
City records show September permits totaling 284 875 dollars with seven new homes valued at 84 200 and Roussell’s four triplexes and one cabana valued at 95 2000. Carter Smith Jost Dalke Bros and others issued permits for multiple homes and 13 remodels.
Richland Schools report group conferences in 21 intermediate rooms with 349 parents attending. The event aims to connect home and school, giving a year overview and ways for parents to assist at home. Kindergarten teachers Leota Adams Pauline Cooke Alma Fuller Mildred Patterson prepare for the Monday October 12 meeting at 7 30 with refreshments.
Forty three Future Farmers of America from nine Kern County high schools won top honors in the annual FFA competition sponsored by First Western Bank and Trust Company with state bureau and school cooperation. Winners from Shefter include Joseph Dino Romanini, Robert Romanini, and Thomas Stephens. all will be honored at a banquet October 7 at the Hacienda Motel in Bakersfield hosted by Erle E. Fulgham.
Jon Martens 13 son of Mr and Mrs Stanley Martens of Reedley died after a bicycle accident in Shafter when struck by a car that failed to stop. The driver, intoxicated, sent his son back later. Funeral services were held at Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church with about 1300 attending. Survived by his parents a sister Elizabeth two brothers Jeremy and Joel and his grandparents Mr and Mrs Henry Martens of Reedley.
The Junior Women's Club of Shafter presents a dessert fashion show on October 15 at 7:30 PM in the Veterans Memorial Hall. Vaughan’s Specialty Shop will display sportswear and after‑five outfits with proceeds benefiting Shafter High School’s scholarship fund. Eight local models were chosen including Marjorie Robertson and Patsy Janzen. Noman Berg of KWSO will narrate.
The Rio Bravo PTA holds its October meeting Thursday at 7 30 P M in the school auditorium. Mrs John Walker president presiding. Mrs Lee Roy Janzen reports membership progress. N R Boggs and Paul Enns announce chairmen for the November 3 Barbecue and Carnival. Eighth grade program under William Benton prepared. programs printed and ready for distribution.
