The formal dedication of the Veterans War Memorial Building occurs this Saturday night with a semi formal dance. Iraigin and his orchestra provide dancing music and dignitaries from across the county attend. Pat Kelly serves as master of ceremonies for the program starting at 7:30 p.m. Open to the public.
City Attorney Al Mortimore informs the council that it is illegal under state law for a city official to sell merchandise to the city and that funds paid to councilmen or their families must be returned. No action was taken. other business included Rem Bristow's request for a wilderness permit to build a mortuary at Central Avenue and Calloway Street, which was tabled.
Final services will be held Sunday October 16 at 2 p.m. in the Missionary Baptist church for Bill Joe Baker who died in a motorcycle accident in Honolulu on September 18. Rev Ted Mouser will officiate and burial will follow at Shafter Cemetery. He was a Navy seaman and the son of Mrs Deba Baker.
At 12 30 noon today a two car crash west of Wasco killed Lyle Lindsey 48 of San Francisco and critically injured three others. Janet Lindsey 47 Peter Moss 73 and La Violette Moss 45 all of Paso Robles were treated at Kern General. Both cars were demolished in the wreck.
The Shafter Recreational Commission met October 11 and approved Roy Farrell's audited financial report detailing program activities, daily averages, and attendance. The panel voted to fund a Civic Banquet speaker in November and planned a Winter Family Night led by J. W. Frizzell and Mrs. J. L. Hill. Commissioner O Neill of Rio Bravo proposed a broader future program that gained support.
The Union Congregational Church trustees outline plans to construct a new building on a site north of Tulare Avenue near Shafter High School. A Building Fund Project led by Glen Putman will mobilize a canvass committee to raise funds after decades of growth and postwar delays. The church will sell its current site to Kern County Land Company and use proceeds to finance the project.
A special meeting for potato growers only will be held tomorrow night at Cawelo to discuss farm legislation affecting potatoes and other crops. Sponsored by the Kern County Potato Growers Association, the meeting invites only potato growers and shippers to discuss price support federal marketing agreements and related topics.
The 20-30 club Turkey Shoot moves to the old Shafter Airport three miles south along the Santa Fe tracks. The event on November 13 is an all day affair with refreshments and the finest birds available.
A gala opening Saturday evening marks the debut of Elsie and Eva's Dining Room and Cafe in the former Fuqua’s corner at Central and Munzer. Owners Mrs. Eva Unruh and Mrs. Elsie Brim, previously tied to Speed Grill, promise a deluxe establishment after a complete rebuilding.
Justesen's unveils its new 125 by 50 foot building after the old structure burned earlier. Owned by Jake Neufeld the brick and tile store features Slimline lighting large windows and celotex ceiling with fireproof construction and marquee signs joining McClure Drugs and Sprouse-Reitz buildings.
A Shafter Christian Business Men's Committee was organized last week with Frank Johnson as chairman Bob Gates as vice chairman Harvey Gaede as treasurer and Veron Neufeld as secretary. A banquet is planned for November 1 charter memberships stay open until then meetings occur every Thursday noon at First Baptist church. 27 men attended the organization meeting. The Christian Business Men's Committee is an international organization formed in 1931 in Chicago.
Dr. H. W. Voth announces his offices will operate temporarily at 551 Central Ave in the Freedman Jacobus building while a new facility on Kern St near Central is built. He will continue his practice at Freedman and Jacobus during construction and moved from the James Street California Avenue site over the weekend with completion expected in about two months.
Shafter high school varsity football hosts Lindsay tomorrow night at 8 p.m. The Generals, favored to win, face a tough battle from Lindsay, a team that has previously held Shafter to losses. Lindsay tied Exeter 0 6 last week, and Shafter aims to reach stride as the home night doubleheader starts with a lightweight game.
Curtis R. Schumacher of New York City will visit Union Congregational Church October 17 to 23 as financial adviser for the Board of Home Missions. He advocates church-led building projects to foster unity and goodwill amid national unrest. The Shafter church seeks a new plant on Tulare Avenue to support its growing Sunday School and programs.
The Woodlake B Team overwhelmed the Shafter Colonels 12-0 in a preliminary game on the Woodlake gridiron last Friday. The Colonels were outplayed. costly fumbles doomed the General team and they played without Henry Rice and Harold Meeks who were lost to injury.
Shafter High Generals routed Woodlake Tigers 26 to 6 last Friday night. Glynn Scales quarterback and Jerry Johns starred with Scales scoring and passing while Edwards and Johns led the rushing drive. Woodlake defense faltered early but briefly rallied in the fourth quarter with Attaway scoring for the Tigers.
Shafter High School will unveil a donated Clock and Scoreboard at Friday's Shafter Lindsay football game on Generals field. Mr Gregory Maloffy Fast Sub-District Governor of the 2030 Club will present the device to Principal Dusty Rhoads. The red and white clock marks twelve minutes and four quarters, runs forward and backward, and stops on the second.
