Shafter High School Future Farmers have consistently placed prize cattle sheep and hogs at Kern County Livestock Show State Fair and Great Western Livestock Show. For ten years local youth trained in animal husbandry have strengthened this agricultural emphasis in a potato cotton and livestock region.
In a concise assessment the San Joaquin Valley is described as having potential for strong livestock production. Stock raising is linked to soil fertility and resilience against booms, offering advantages over crop-focused farming.
John Clayton Camp aged 98 died early Thursday at his home in Gaffney South Carolina in the same house he lived in for decades. He was a longtime farmer and active Providence Baptist Church member, father of S A Camp C C Camp J D Camp B Camp W C Camp Mrs J Q Sar and C F Swofford and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shaffer High School Generals travel to Lindsay for their opener at 4 p.m. in a Stiff league test. The Lindsay squads promise tough competition with likely key players out or limited by injuries as Shaffer aims to reverse last year’s 14 0 defeat and start the season strong.
The Shafter cotton bale float from Bakersfield will highlight the Delano Wine and Harvest Festival parade. Junior Women’s Club members Pat Neuman Elsie Warren Louise Koehn Maxine Mettler Ruth Handel Miriam Claudine Rodgers will model cotton dress styles. Miss Jenee Deegan and a figure named Jake will also attend as special attractions.
Phil Ohanneson of the Kern County Committee Against Senate Reapportionment urged a no vote on Prop 13. He warned that senate reapportionment would punish 96 percent of California and destroy checks and balances, benefiting four large counties at the expense of the rest.

The Richland Parent-Teachers Association has shifted its big barbecue to Wednesday evening October 13 at Manuel Park. Serv ing runs 6 to 8 30 p m with a bonfire if cool weather. Beef donated by Kern County Land Company, prepared under Jack Battaglia supervision. Beans salad and trimmings by Richland Cafeteria head Mrs Sylvia Baughman.
At the Kern County Fair junior livestock sale 63 steers 15 lambs and 19 hogs sold. L A Camp of Shafter won all three grand champions paying 1.75 per pound for steers 15 per pound for lambs and 4.75 per pound for hogs. Over 50 buyers attended the 97 sales with strong community support and donations to FFA.
Miss Miriam Devlin of Shafter High School and Buttonwillow 4 H Club won first in the senior calf division and earned another ribbon for a 900 pound steer sold as beef at the Kern County Fair junior livestock sale.
The second highest price paid at the annual Tattersalls Sales in Lexington was 5000 dollars for a yearling colt. Dazzleway, sired by Billy Direct and out of Erla, was sold to L A Camp of Shafter. Gainsway Farm of Lexington had a higher bid.
Little Ronnie Luker of Ington California is visiting at the home of his great mother Mrs Alice Luker.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club opened its fall season at the Women's Club House with a large turnout. Mrs. John H. Revell presided as lunch tables featured antique table decorations loaned by members. Miss Blythe Monroe, who spoke on UNESCO, quoted its preamble stressing culture, education for justice and peace, and the goal of peaceful world understanding through education.
Shafter High School FFA boys returned with 68 prize ribbons and 965.50 dollars in beef prize money. Twelve boys sold steers in the junior livestock auction, led by Jack Janzen 1020 pounds at 60 cents per pound. Janzen Jim Neuman and Leland Kroeker headed top beef showmanship and breeding awards, with numerous firsts across junior fat-beef cattle and open divisions.
