The Shafter City Council authorized a contract with Alexander and Dorman of Hanford for architectural work on the new police facility. The agreement spans several phases, with the option to halt after assessing project costs.
Three Shafter boys age 16 to 18, Dennis Bender Larry Bender and Mike Bender, were injured in a three car collision on Central Valley Highway near Poplar. They, and James Earl Casteel and Irene Appleton, and Rudy Garcia Velarde were all treated at Mercy Hospital. The crash remains under CHP review with a citation likely. Dennis the driver faced no citation.
Dr. David Cooke announces Richland School is one of 25 California districts chosen to test a new math program by Houghton Mifflin. Teachers from kindergarten to eighth grade will receive monthly in service support with consultants Charles Bannister and Dick Smith assisting at Richland.

Mrs. Lillie Harrington accepted the Bronze Star with V for valor posthumously awarded to her son Pvt. Roger C. Mitchell at a Sunday service at the Army Reserve Center in Bakersfield. Mitchell, 20, of Delano, was killed January 5, 1967 in Vietnam after three months in country. He held infantry rank with Purple Heart and Vietnam medals awarded posthumously. His family includes Wesley Mitchell, Martin, and Martin Coker of Delano.
Shafter City Council delayed action on a 10,000 claim filed for Margaret Richard a minor alleging unlawful arrest search and assault by the Shafter Police Department. City Attorney Mortimore said the city has 45 days to decide after consulting with the city’s insurer. The claim cites September 13.
The Shafter Lions Club will operate Oct 11 and 12 selling light bulbs to raise funds for Boy Scouts Blue Birds conservation scholarships and various community projects. The club approved 965 for future needs and invites $2 purchases to support local youth activities and civic efforts. New members include Carrlie Brannen Joe Maniaci Arliss Biloff Neal Olsen and Verl Nash.
Mayor Allen L. Zenk proclaims the week of October 8 to 14, 1967 as City and County Government Week urging citizen participation in ceremonies and educational activities to understand local government structure and services. The proclamation notes local government benefits and the push for public awareness of its functions.
Herbert Midgley a Shafter pioneer businessman died Wednesday in a Burbank hospital after a heart attack Tuesday. He bought Shafter's first department store in 1919, later operated on the site of Western Auto, and his family once owned the building now housing Dr. J J Baerg. He and wife married 1911 and moved from Taft to Shafter in 1919. Born September 4 1879 in Halifax England he later moved to Taft and then Shafter, attending Brownsberger Business College in Los Angeles.
The Public Utility District votes to construct a sewer line to serve Rodriquez Park restrooms with city funding for the connection. The plan runs across the Weinberger property pending easement. the county would survey at city cost. No progress on merging the District with the City was reported.
