First picking of cotton began at Shafter area gins on Monday as SJ 1 cotton shows early maturity. Growers expect a good crop with maturity and picking about three weeks ahead of Acala 442. Reports note variable field conditions and no pink bollworms in the area. weather will be key to a successful season.
The Congregational Church in Shafter hosts a Bible Conference October 6 to 8 with Dr Charles Lee Feinberg dean of Talbot Theological Seminary as speaker. He lectures on prophetic themes at 7 p.m. Friday Saturday and Sunday and delivers the Sunday morning sermon at 11. The event opens with a pot luck supper at 6 p.m. Friday.
The office of Judge Harvey Gaede reports total intake of 6123.50 with 3842.50 from vehicle fines 833 in assessments and 951.15 in City of Shafter fines.

Deputy Sheriff Don Mansfield of San Luis Obispo barely dodges a .22 pistol shot from suspect Arthur Edwin Glenn, 69, of Arroyo Grande as he investigates a lurking man. Glenn is detained for psychiatric care after the incident at a General Hospital.

Cafeteria patronage fell and hours in both cafeterias were cut from 86.9 to 75 per week, potentially rising again.
