1974 Sets New Permit Record In City Construction Year
With three months left in 1974 the city has issued permits totaling $1 558 058, a new annual record far surpassing the 1955 high of $1 534 759. September permits reached $37 978, including one new residence and three remodels.

Theft report twists into complex case at Jiffy Food Store
Shafter police probe a robbery gone wrong after clerk Russell Mayer reported a 1200 dollar theft. Mayer, under narcotic influence, allegedly aided by Don and Francis Tatum in the plot while David Wheeler damaged a jail cell door. Mayer and the Tatums face charges of grand theft. Wheeler gets 10 days.

Shatter Weather Totals Rain in Week Ending Monday
The week ended Monday saw Shatter record one fifth of an inch of rain with temperatures in the low eighties. Rain occurred in three installments including over an inch in Bakersfield Wasco and nearby areas with .08 inch on Thursday and a final .01 inch drizzle Monday bringing season total to .22 inch. Daily highs and lows were logged at the USDA Cotton Research station.

Wiley Nominated for Kern County Teacher of the Year
Eighth grade teacher Ray Wiley of Richland has been nominated by the Richland Teachers Association for Kern County Teacher of the Year. Wiley, a 16 year Richland veteran, teaches Mexican history and marine and earth science and has held roles with SCICON and the California Council of Geographic Education. The winner advances to statewide, then national competition.
