Richland PTA Carnival Opens Evening Big Night in Shafter

Richland PTA barbecue and carnival kicks off at Richland school grounds from 5 to 8 PM with $1.50 admission. Kiwanis bring ping pong, Exchange Club serves barbecue with beans salad hot rolls. Tickets sold by Mrs. Somers and Mrs. Fast. others from Women’s Club and PTA executive members. Richland bus drivers assist. Other groups include American Legion Ring Tess 20/30 Make Up and Kappa Ni.

Calif Scholarship Federation Students Honored at Assembly

Shafter High School students earned CSF membership at a Wednesday assembly. Officers included Tom Kelly who urged members to uphold school and honor. Seniors listed Dolly Begley Carol Froese Nonhof Mike Panero Beverly Tatum. juniors and sophomores named. reception followed hosted by Cornell, Dean of Girls and CSF advisor.

Lions Club Accepts Trophies From Golf Tourney Team

Knowland to Speak Oct. 6

U S Senator William F Knowland is scheduled to speak on October 6 at a venue located near 18th and Myrtle streets. Community members are invited to attend the event featuring the California Republican leader.

Double Tragedy in Buttonwillow Claims Two Lives

The West Side Canal in Buttonwillow caused two drownings last Sunday September 28. Five year old Juanita Mena of Wasco Way fell in and died after rescue attempts. Arnold Clinton Cornelison died in the same incident with responders aiding the effort. Both bodies were found about 30 yards downstream at 5:00 p.m. Deputy Coroner Ross Jones identified the adult victim as Cornelison with aid from Lt. Phil Munding Sgt. Dave Fuller and Deputy Robert Voorhees.

Shafter Merchants Hold October Meeting At Fire Station

The Shafter Merchants Association schedules its monthly gathering for next Tuesday October 8 at 8:00 p.m. in the Shafter Fire Station. Members are urged to attend and Tony Brown chairman requests contributions for the Christmas program be brought to the meeting.

Shafter Kiwanis Pancake Break Sets Attendance Record

The Shafter Kiwanis Club capped a successful Saturday event with over 750 attendees at the all you can eat morning meal from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. Co chairs Bill Johnson and Les Williams reported the record turnout and thanked the community for supporting the charity feed. Bob Bann hosted while Shafter High School provided a string ensemble as part of the program and many door prizes were given to attendees.

Pixley Market Keeps Bargains As Shafter Copy Lures Shopper

Bob Tatum of the Modern Market reported a strong weekend in Shafter with their best sales since 1957 potato season. A caller from Pixley bought 15 pounds of meat held for pickup, and three women who arrived at noon bought the meat plus three large grocery baskets. One of the shoppers said she heard about the prices through the Shafter Press.

Bann Named Manager at KWSO Radio Station

Bob Bann has been named manager of KWSO radio, replacing Theo Heinrichs who resigned to run a Wasco department store. A Shafter Wasco area figure since 1950, Bann has held community roles with the Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, and the Kern Philharmonic Society. He and his wife Ruth reside at 236 Cross Street with children Christina and Billy.

Backyard Carnival Raises Over Ten Dollars for School

A Saturday backyard carnival at Jim Eckmann's home in Shafter featured a hot dog stand, coke booth, marbles game, darts, and prize bulls eye. Neighborhood boys ran games for two weeks and held a vote with children and parents present.

Richland School District Welcomes New Teacher Miss Banner

Miss Banner, a traveling Texan with Northwest and Canada visits, joins Richland staff after a Hawaii summer session. She trained in El Paso public schools, Texas Western College, the University of Texas, and Hawaii, and has served in educational associations while planning a career from English to primary teaching.
