Grand Jury probes Shafter Community Correctional Facility
Kern County Grand Jury visited the Shafter Community Correctional Facility to review condition and management under Penal Code 919b. The 77,000 square foot, six acre campus on East Ash Avenue houses 480 beds with eight dormitories and a 47 member security unit. Inmates work on Cal Trans crews and city projects, earning small wages for the Inmate Work Incentive Program, while education and rehabilitation programs operate alongside medical services and a robust visitor program. The panel recommends boosting bed capacity and pursuing a joint inmate vocational training program with CDCR, and urges public posting of the report.
