Valley Cotton Harvest Needs More Labor This Year
A Bakersfield farm labor meeting on September 12 approved expanding recruiting and referral facilities to meet an estimated 10 000 additional workers needed for the valley cotton harvest. With 505 140 acres planted this year compared with 357 162 last year, several thousand bales have already been ginned and picking began September 22. Authorities plan recruiting offices in the Bay Area Sacramento Stockton and other California points to channel workers to short supply areas. Last year’s program yielded strong results and this year may be even more effective as harvests start early and workers seek conditions in the valley.
