The Shafter Chamber of Commerce booth won first place earning a $500 prize, plus $750 for making the overall display worth $1,250. Arvin, who had won first place in recent years, would have faced a tough challenge to beat Shafter. Members credited Herb Howell for enlarged photographs and many locals for helping with the agriculture themed exhibit recalling Kern County’s “good old days.”

Quiet Shafter Weekend Sees Drunk Driving Arrests
Police and sheriff reports say Shafter had a quiet weekend with several drunk driving arrests. A minor and a juvenile faced public intoxication charges during bar and sidewalk incidents. One man, Jose Orvina, was arrested after a West Ash drinking party. Everett Byrd and Kenneth Sanderson were also taken into custody for public drunkenness. Angel Canez was injured when a car he was working on pinned him, later transported to Kern Medical Center. Deputies in Lost Hills handled a separate contact with two Mexican males.
