The Continuous Variety Testing Committee reports SJ-1 tops nine commercial cottons with 2519 pounds seed cotton per acre, vs Acala 442 at 2138. Other lines follow: Stoneville 7-A 2356, Coker 201 2229, 1517-D 2181, 1517-V 2098, Hopicala 2032, Paymaster 54-B 1642, DPL-5540 1494.
Button Willow farmer Robert Smith was reelected District Five director of the California Farm Bureau Federation at the 49th annual meeting in Burlingame. Allan Grant, Fred Heringer, and Gerald Geiger were reelected to top state posts. Delegates supported improved housing and education for farm workers and backed broader open market policy for agriculture. Preliminary cotton yields cited by Patrick Hillman suggest new lines like SJ-1 and 12302 variants show high potential, with final data pending. John Turner, agronomist, serves on the Testing Committee.
The County Board of Supervisors will review a five year agricultural lease for 80 acres at Shafter Airport at 3 30 p m on December 5 1967. The proposed lessees are Lowell Bergman and Vernon L Isaac with the lease valued at 27500. A legal advertisement appears on Page 3.

Tom Shafer Wasco News publisher received honors from the Wasco Exchange Club for 44 years of service to the Wasco community. He has been in Wasco since 1923 and is the oldest active newspaper publisher in Kern County.
Renegade football coach Jerry Collis will be the featured speaker at the twenty first annual Shafter Civic Football Banquet honoring all Shafter High School football squads. The event is at 7 p.m. Tuesday December 5 at the Veterans Memorial Hall with invites extended to both men and women. The Most Valuable Player award will be announced by head coach Walter Mince. Banquet tickets are $2.50 per plate and available at the high school office or from Shafter Service Clubs.
Phillip Zachary a Richland School District board member was chosen for a one year seat on the 1968 California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly. The gathering in San Francisco December 6 to 9 will cover finances tax revolt integration testing and educator governance topics.
The office of C. H. Pope issued two permits in November for new residences, each valued at $9,000. Recipients were Jim Prendez of 456 Rodriguez and Saints Gonzales of 450 Rodriguez. Additional remodeling permits went to Tom Beam 626 Central for $250, R. J. Moorehead 524 Minter for $350, and Wyman Stark 457 Mark for $700.
A 1954 Ford belonging to Lloyd 5S Murr of 339 West Ash was found in a grape field at the corner of West Lerdo and Schnidt after being reported missing the previous evening.
Shafter College students returned home for Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends. Raydon Fortenberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fortenberry, was home from UC Santa Barbara where he completes graduate work and student teaching, set to finish December 7. Other Fortenberry relatives joined the feast along with Rev. and Mrs. Owen Onsum and their family. Judy Onsum visited from Fresno, while Judy Onsum’s mother hosted Thanksgiving at her Fresno home.
Dr. David Cooke of the Richland School District clarifies that recent remarks misstate bond outcomes. He notes the successful bond election was for the high school district, not Richland Elementary, and urges accuracy in reporting amid local controversy and budget concerns.

A large Thanksgiving gathering at 300 Rosa Lee included Mr. and Mrs. Lee Fike and relatives from Oildale Bakersfield Shafter and Fresno. Notables were Leyva a Santa Barbara engineering sophomore home for holidays and Beverly Greene UC Santa Barbara senior visiting with Harold Greene family. Roy and Wilson siblings also present among extended kin.
Shafter High School announces two basic required courses that grant diploma credit. U S History first meet Thursday November 30 from 7 to 10 p m in Room 21 cine economics building. Government class parking lot near the football field recommended for attendees. English Review credit for English 9 10 or 11 first meeting Monday December 4 from 7 to 10 p m room number to be announced.
